As someone who often works in that area, I am more than a little bit excited. Alas the real work will not begin until next year, but still it will be nice to have a better crossing.
Over the next fortnight, high voltage electricity and gas lines will be lowered at Bowen Place. The work will take place from 7:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday and 7:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays.
NCA Chief Executive said this is the first component of work to improve safety at the Bowen Place crossing.
‘This work marks the start of the Bowen Place underpass which, when complete, will allow motorists, pedestrians and cyclists continuous access,’ Mr Rake said.
‘Relocating the electricity and gas lines is required before major earth work and construction begins next year.

I really wanted a bridge connecting to the bridge….
It is anticipated the underpass will be constructed prior to the centenary of Canberra celebrations in 2013 ???

Complete with CCTV surveillance presumably?
Ah, I often drive past there and think – they really should do something about that crossing, it’s a death trap. Didn’t know they actually WERE planning to do something about it. Sometimes the government pleasantly surprises me. (Sometimes.)

I would wager your surprise on discovering the cost of this project would be far less pleasant!
I hope they don’t go too deep and end up below the water table, that would make an interesting crossing.
