As part of the redevelopment and revitalisation of the Dickson Group Centre, $3.38 million has been allocated over the next three years to upgrade five intersections to ensure the safe management of traffic in and around the precinct.
The work is expected to commence in the latter part of this year and be completed by mid 2016. The intersections where work will be undertaken are:
•Antill St – Badham St where traffic signals are to be installed;
•Antill St – Cowper St where there will be modifications to the existing signalised intersection;
•Cowper St – Dickson Shops Access Rd where minor improvements will be made;
•Cowper St – Dickson Pl where modification to the existing signalised intersection are proposed; and
•Badham St – Dickson Pl where new traffic signals are to be installed.
In addition to the installation of new traffic signals, other work to be undertaken at the intersections include modifications to kerbs and medians, reconstruction of pavement, line marking and signposting.
The Dickson Group Centre is one of the largest and most diverse in Canberra and the redevelopment of its commercial precinct, and these associated road upgrades, is recognition of the significant role that it will play in the continued revitalisation of the area.
The redevelopment, including two new supermarkets and other speciality retailers, plus 150 apartments and 500 undercover car parking spaces, will generate additional peak traffic volumes on the local road network in coming years.
This will also lead to greater use of public transport, bicycles and pedestrian traffic and these changes have been factored into these upgrades.
As part of these road upgrades, temporary traffic management plans will need to be implemented and the ACT Government is working to ensure as little disruption as possible.
