‘ACT4GWS’, Canberra’s bid to partner with AFL’s newest franchise, Team GWS, is calling on the Canberra community for one last show of support as it looks to secure its target of 5,000 $50 pledges.

As of this morning, ‘ACT4GWS’ has secured 4,879 pledges with a small number of pledge books still to be returned.

Should the ‘ACT4GWS’ campaign be successful, Canberra will secure:

    — 40 games of AFL over the next 10 years
    — a board position for someone from Canberra on the GWS board
    — continued investment in local talent academies
    — the commitment to play in a Canberra jersey when the team plays in Manuka
    — the establishment of a summer AFL training camp
    — community camps
    — the commitment to field a team in the Canberra competition for 2010

Pledges can be made at www.ACT4GWS.com.au

UPDATE: According to the site counter they’ve made it!

Possibly thanks to Alistair Coe signing up all the Liberal MLA’s.

the AFL will poo poo that straight off the bat as they have to approve strips and each team has 2, home and away and the away is mostly white so as not to confuse with the ‘home’ team. Carlton, West Coast, Freo spring to mind and they are awful alternatives.

West Coast (and Brisbane and Melbourne) had three jumpers in 2010 and Carlton and Freo are widely regarded as two of the clubs who actually got it right with their clash design! (West Coast, I am sorry to say, is not).

The AFL usually only chucks a wobbly over a) too many one-off jumpers or b) not enough clash breaking options.

My understanding of the Canberra element that may appear on the jumper design would be as simple as having an ACT coat of arms on an otherwise regular GWS jumper.

I don’t ever think it was thought “we” would have a Canberra/ACT specific jumper with unique colours etc.

Where did the play in Canberra colours for Manuka games come from? Never seen that before. And that’s such a ‘nice’ thought but lets be honest here, the AFL will poo poo that straight off the bat as they have to approve strips and each team has 2, home and away and the away is mostly white so as not to confuse with the ‘home’ team. Carlton, West Coast, Freo spring to mind and they are awful alternatives.

Serious? You Kanbrans’ won’t even go to a Raiders game unless they won the last 40…

Different game my friend, different game.

No doubt.

The point I was trying to make is if the locals won’t even support a premiership winning (albeit in the stone age)League side that is specifically Canberra branded, why the hell would they support a GWS branded AFL team that plays four games a year in the ACT?

Because supporters of Aussie Rules don’t tend to be as quite bandwagonish as followers of other codes

I like how the AFL can screw Canberra and the gioverment for as much money as they like then try and sell us on an AFL team thats playing out of the heart of Rugby League and Football (Soccer).

Apparently the team name and colours will be announced in mid november. Given the Gold coast tried to go nicknameless then came up with Suns, to go along with a lot of the very ordinary nick names in the AFL, who knows what they’ll pick this time.

Still we can all support the Canberra Calvalry in the new ABL…… or maybe not.

I love my sport, i just dislike the the lack of credit we are given here in Canberra. Cricket Australia and the AFL being the main ones. Taswegians prob feel the same regarding the AFL.

The AFL have nothing to do with it. It’s an initiative of the GWS board

Or better yet, donate your $50 to a local charity.

I’ll be supporting the Cavalry. Be interesting to know how much government support they are getting as compared to what the AFL is asking for.

How did that work out?

We have a Canberra competition?

Already pledged once. Looks like I might need to put in a pledge for Mrs C as well.
