“Victory in Europe” was a night that will go down in history!

I thought I would share with you what I got up to on Saturday night. I attended “The Stomp” dance spectacular. “The Stomp” is a cooperative project organised by a group of volunteers from the local dance community and the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin. The disasterous Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 was the trigger for the organisers decision to run the first Stomp as a couple of dancers pondered what they could do in the face of such an enormous human tragedy. The first Stomp raised $4000 and helped to get a Sri Lankan fishing village back to work with new fishing boats. Since then Stomp has run every 3 months and raised between two and three thousand dollars each night. The money is dedicated to needy charities identified by the Rotary Club.

The first Stomp dance for this year was held on the 17th of February at the Albert Hall in Yarralumla. The theme was a 1940’s celebration of Victory in Europe (VE Day), with all monies raised going to CanTeen

The Stomp is a night of great live music, professional dance performances, dance competitions, the odd surprise and of course, lots of dancing. The Stomp tries to cater for the broadest array of dance styles and you will certainly see plenty of swing, ceroc, rock and roll, Latin and ballroom styles. Each Stomp begins with complementary dance classes enabling you to expand your dance knowledge – Stomp is the ultimate event for any enthusiastic dancer!

So if you are keen to support local charity and have a great time, write this date in your diary – Stomp 10 will be held on the 12th May 2007, theme yet to be announced. You can find more information on The Stomp at www.thestomp.org

He’s already attracted his quota of chicks – I suspect he’s not really looking to enlarge his field of interest beyond his current beloved.

If you can dance jb you will become a chick magnet.

Spot on Poisonivy!

I think JB should give it another shot – maybe take that someone special along with…

Then JB could post a story about his experience – are you up for the challenge JB?

exactly Rara – I laugh my head off, and sometimes stop in the middle of a song to do so!

The thing about dancing is that it is a partnership, and if something doesn’t feel right, then it’s more than likely a two-way thing (no matter what the level of experience of each of the dancers). Part of the joy of it all is figuring it out, even though it doesn’t feel like that at first!

I once went to a swingers meet

– oh hangon you said swing.

oh it wasn’t just one…

JB – did you ever consider that the girl was laughing at herelf for her own ability or disability? I spend most of the dance classes I go to in stitches as I feel challenged by the moves. I am not laughing at my partner just at myself!

sorry to hear you had a bad experience jb. it can be very confronting at first – you feel like everyone is watching and judging, but actually they are all watching their own feet.

If you dig on swing music, there is nothing better than being able to express that on the dancefloor – it’s like flying!

so I would encourage anyone who’s been turned off after one class (of whatever style) to give it another whirl – let’s face it, it can’t be any worse than the first time!

Oh I agree, it looks like great fun.

Just if I’m doing a beginners course I really, really need it to be a beginners course.

You guys don’t know what you are missing. When you get a good teacher, and get some confidence up, it can bring so much joy. Hey don’t knock it there may be other people out there interested!! :o)

I let go of mine at the wrong time and she ‘swung’ right through the doors and ended up on her backside in the mud outside.

I was not invited back.

My swing dancing “beginners” lesson was the worst night of my life.

Expected to dance straight off the boat with women who’d done the course three times and they fair dinkum laughed in my face.

Oh, dear, the swing dancing cult is getting going again. I swear, it’s like Amway with a better sense of rhythm…

Comfort woman.

Hello sailor!!! I know the chick in those photos, but I don’t know the sexy spunks she’s dancing with. Did we have any luck girls?

Were you there poison ivy? I didnt see you…I have been so slack but getting back into swing is great fun. I tell everyone I meet to go along to class. :o)

Girls LOVE a fella who can dance, Rara! (and ps, bonfire, I’ve been to a swing dance camp where they taught the electric boogaloo – if you started up, you might find yourself with an instant posse!

So let me put in a plug for swing dancing as well – Jumptown runs classes at different locations 4 nights a week (ANU, O’Connor, Braddon, Narrabundah). Check out http://www.jumptown.org for more details

. . . and keep an eye out for Jumptown’s Fall Ball at the Albert Hall on Friday 23 March!

The only way to get over dancing phobia is to give it a go and take lessons….any takers?? I do ceroc classses which are on a monday and wednesday night, check out ceroccanberra.com.au for details. Its fun – don’t need to bring a partner and all the moves you learn can easily be incorporated into the Canberra nightclub scene! Remember….girls like a fella who can dance!

id go if they let me bring a sheet of cardboard for the electric boogaloo and other forms of hip and or hop…

Looks like fun but I’d have to get over my phobia of dancing

Stomp is always great fun, and this one was a blast! So nice to be in Albert Hall and I’m looking forward to supporting the next stomp coming up.
