ACT Policing’s campaign targeting motorists who used a mobile phone while driving resulted in 207 Traffic Infringement Notices being issued for this offence during the month of September (September 1 – 30).
Research shows that driver distraction is a significant contributing factor in serious motor vehicle collisions. Throughout September, all ACT Policing members actively looked for road users that were using their mobile telephone while driving without the correct mounting device in their vehicle.
Also, over the past week (September 26 – October 3) 26 drink drivers were apprehended with seven of these drivers having a 0.00 licence. Of the 26 drivers apprehended, 8 were recidivist offenders, having been caught at least once before for drink driving.
The highest recorded reading for the month was from a 46-year-old man who recorded a reading of 0.180. The man has a 0.05 licence.
ACT Policing will be focusing on speeding for the month of October as part its road safety campaign. The campaign targets traffic offences that contribute to death and serious injuries on Canberra’s roads.
