104.7 & MIX 106.3 favoured by people who still listen to the radio

According to a press release we recieved from Canberra FM Radio, the Nielsen Radio Ratings were released today. It turns out that the top two spots in ACT radio are taken up by the top two most generic stations on air.

Who’d have guessed?

Both stations have enjoyed significant audience growth since the last Survey period in August 2012 with the MIX 106.3 breakfast show, Rod & Biggzy, almost doubling their share of listeners in the Canberra region.

Canberra FM Radio Content Director, Drew Chapman, puts this growth on MIX 106.3 down to a deliberate return to being involved in
everything Canberra from a school fete to the Canberra 100 celebrations through to supporting those in need as highlighted in the recent fundraising campaign which saved Pegasus Riding for the Disabled.

Drew claims that 106.3’s success is down to “the hard work, commitment and consistency of those who work for our stations every day” and not due to the fact that they provide completely vanilla mundane entertainment for people who haven’t realised they live in the future yet. Drew also adds, “We’ve pushed MIX 106.3, particularly Rod & Biggzy, right out into peoples communities and they’ve made some very strong connections, while 104.7 just continues to build on a legacy of consistency with Scotty & Nige claiming the number 1 spot in Breakfast and still delivering massive events such as Skyfire to the city for the past 25 years.”

Are there any radio duos out there where at least one of the two doesn’t have a wacky nickname?

Here are the stats released for those who are interested:
Audience Share: People 10+, Mon-Sun 5:30am-12:00am
104.7 23.9%
MIX106.3 16.8%
ABC666 14.0%
2CC 6.7%
2CA 6.8%

I listen to 106.3 when my CD’s get boring ever since JJJ went crap.

That’s just an age thing. JJJ went crap for me sometime in the mid-eighties, before CD’s were commonplace.

There are so many wonderful internet radio stations out there now. Why bother with broadcasts anymore?

I fixed JJJ by riding my motorbike to and from work – It means i’m not listening when Hack is on, which fixes with JJJ listening experience… kind of.

Still too much wishy washy minimalistic hipster crap, but it’s better than listening to that s***house Bruno Mars song on repeat… Sorry, I meant 106.3.

There are two things that bring severe hate out of me. The first: Canberra drivers and the second: those two radio stations. 104.7 plays horrific noise pollution for morons and children and 106.3 plays the same 250 – 300 songs over and over again and has done for years – innoffensive overplayed garbage. How anyone with a quarter of a brain or even the slightest respect for real music can listen to either of these two utter jokes is beyond my comprehension.

Actually I haven’t listened to the radio in ages. I love hunting down cool DJ sets, remixes and mashups on youtube. Very addictive.

Raw fm but their broadcast is so crap it might as well not exist. Online raw fm sometimes but there are heaps of other options. I love how DIfm has that long list of genres so you can pick a beat and energy level and just get on with your day. Electro trance, prog house, whatever. But also SBS Pop Asia from time to time for some good old cheesy pop.

666 ABC would do better if they were on FM. Digital radio penetration (ouch, there’s an unfortunate pun) is not deep enough yet (oh, stop it) for it to replace FM yet. And it drives me nuts when they have different programmes (note the spelling) on digital from AM.

They would also do better if they would jack up their signal strength so we can receive it in the nearby bits of NSW, like Bungendore and Braidwood and points in between, though that listenership wouldn’t feature in these stats I suppose.

I have a digital radio in the car (Pure Highway connected by line-in) but will never be able to have an integrated system because the car has a proprietary stereo system. Not easy to fit an aftermarket jobby, and if I did I would lose steering wheel control, LCD display and so on. Aerial for the Pure isn’t great.

I wonder how many people have no choice & are forced to listen to 104.7 or 106.3 i.e. Shared offices, waiting rooms etc…

Lots, I’d say! Both stations are “easy” to have on in the background without having to worry about the music not being mainstream enough, swearing, too much boring talk-back, etc etc.

Everyone *should* have a hands free unit.

I use the jabra freeway:

http://www.amazon.com/Jabra-FREEWAY-Bluetooth-Speakerphone-Packaging/dp/B004XZHY34

paired with my phone it also happily plays my mp3’s.

Dims the volume to give me driving directions, and turns off the music when a phone call comes in.

My glorious Camry’s CD player stopped working, as did my iPod. The car radio still works, though. So when I drive it’s Classic FM for me, until they have interviews in voices that sound like records called ‘Teaching Benighted Foreigners To Speak The King’s English’, circa 1950.

Then I turn off the radio and hum.

2CA all the way. Classic non-intrusive songs that while the time away. The ads don’t seem as offensive as most and the presenters, while a bit corny, don’t make you want to fill your ears with Selleys No More Gaps.
Got a digital receiver in the house, one in the back yard, one to take to the worksite and locked to AM in the cars.

Shout out to my man Adrian at 2XX

ever since the metal show Let’s Mosh on 2XX finished I don’t listen to any radio

That lasted about a week and a half. Back on the J’s now.

Tom and Alex on Triple J in the mornings.

The popularity of 104.7 continues to baffle me. They have a playlist of about 10 songs, the only people who find Scotty and Nige funny are themselves, and Fifi in the afternoon makes me want rip my ears off.

I can see why these stations are the most popular though. Most public business, cafes etc will have one of these two radio stations as they are the least likely to offend, as will many workplaces.

This is a big fall from grace for the Devil’s Radio 666, usually No 1 or No 2. It seems people have grown tired of leftist propaganda

There’s leftist propaganda on 666? Oh, gods, tell me when – please! I long for some leftist propaganda!

aaah the joys of having a digital radio in my car. my stereo wents belly up and when i investigated new car stereo’s found a few for the $300 mark (a couple of years back now).

Best idea ever IMO. digital grandstand for sports lover, digital local ABC for those who are not. Plus quite a few SBS channels i like as well. Even a country channel for those who like a bit of hay.

What about the customers too who have to listen to such rubbish. In Europeit was wonderful shopping in peaceful shopping centres and supermarkets and coffee lounges where there was no loud music (noise). People even talked quietly to each other. They also talked quietly on their phones.

It would be great if there was no noise (music) in public places, including car parks. It is just so idiotic.

I’m surprise no one has mentioned internet radio.

We are regular listeners to Radio Paradise, an Internet only radio station located in San Francisco. Their play list is though they had based it on my CD collection. The sad thing is that their play list is also very similar to 106.3’s, just infinitely more listenable without the ads and idiot announcers.

On taco night we tune into Radio Mexico for a bit of atmosphere.

I have to listen to mix 106.3 at work….it makes me want to actually rip off my ears. Widest variety is a complete load of BS. I cant believe that in 2013 they still get away with playing what seems to be “101 greatest hits” album on shuffle everyday. What I find even harder to believe is that during the “all request lunch” The people who listen to it actually REQUEST songs that they probably played just yesterday.
Seems to me, you can request any song…as long as it’s on our 101 greatest hits if the 80’s album. It makes my ears bleed….seriously….done even get me started on the “3PM Pick-up”

+1 this.

Old episodes of Get This and Martin-Molloy 0.00001%

(well my iPod uses an FM transmitter to play in my car, so technically it counts…95.0FM, if you’re within 2 metres of my car!)

That’s more or less what I was getting at with the “live in the future” remark.

Oh, right, that’s what you meant.

But I forgot to mention the irony, that I use it to listen to the past (70s, 80s music).

There’s no accounting for taste I suppose.

I don’t understand how people can listen not only to plastic music – but moreso I don’t understand how they put up with 15-20 minutes of ads each hour!

I stick to ABC and Grandstand digital for sport, and JJJ and Unearthed digital for new music – but the lack of advertising is overwhelmingly the reason for this more than the music (and certainly more than the ‘personalities’ that exist on any of these stations!)

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to stations like 106.3 and 104.7, because I doubt they’re overly prepared for what increased uptake of digital radio will do to their market share.

Did you miss out on a job at the FM’s Barcham? Or did one of their sales girls turn you down? I work next to a business who advertise on the radio here and their sales girl from the station who visits is an absolute hottie.

So much hate in you young one 😉

Just thought I’d throw this out there – http://committocommunityradio.org.au

This is a big fall from grace for the Devil’s Radio 666, usually No 1 or No 2. It seems people have grown tired of leftist propaganda but can’t bring themselves to listen to 2CC’s shock jocks. Either way it is not good news for Aunty, especially in a city like Canberra where the ABC traditionally has a stranglehold.

we bounce between 106.3, triple J and the UC radio station. We would listen to the UC Radio more if we could hear it futher away from UC. (Fortunately we spend most of our drive time around UC

102.3 Roolz KO! Especially Emma in the mornings.

If, as they say, the growth of 106.3 is due to “a deliberate return to being involved in everything Canberra from a school fete to the Canberra 100 celebrations through to supporting those in need” then I say good on them.

Pretty damning on JJJ if 106.3 seems like a step up.

I’m quite happy to be. I was just countering the RA headline to the story.

Are there any radio duos out there where at least one of the two doesn’t have a wacky nickname?

Yes because Scotty & Nigel are such whacky names lol 🙂

Warning! Warning! Massive Generalisation Ahead!

So, at least 40.3% of listeners have no interest in creativity, modernity, or something a bit different. No surprise for Canberra there….

well if everyone was into something it wouldn’t be a bit different now would it?

I wonder how many people have no choice & are forced to listen to 104.7 or 106.3 i.e. Shared offices, waiting rooms etc…

I prefer the patter of the DJ3000 myself. How does he stay so up to date?

According to the story here, 40.3% of the audiemce listen to the top two stations, meaning 59.7% listen to something else.

I don’t think minority means what you think it means.
