The great pineapple juice shortage of 2009?

By PM - 22 January 2009 42

Is there a pineapple juice shortage in Canberra?

Every time I go to the cafe, the only juice 99% guarranteed to not be there is pineapple juice.

When I go shopping, I see empty shelves reserved for pineapple juice (except for the stuff in tins).

Am I the only one seeing this?? What’s the deal?!

What’s Your opinion?

You’re talking about the pineapple juice, yeah?!

I work in a food takeaway shop in the Canberra Centre food court and most certainly, those who ask for pineapple juice are 99% men. Our juice supplier also says that to us about the increased sales of pineapple juices following those claims…

Perhaps the shortage in availability of pineapple juice is direction proportional to the rise in popularity of the theory that consuming it can vastly improve the taste of one’s own *ahem* intimate juices.

Mardi Gras is on again soon in Sydney, so I’m guessing the boys are hogging it all!

WTF??

Well it is thought that when males drink pineapple juice it is meant to make the sperm taste like pineapple, personally I would rather drink it fresh from the bottle.

Well in that case I have never drunk pineapple juice in my life. In fact, I’ve probably never even heard of it.

(Apart from the infamous ‘care-to-come-back-to-my-place-for-some-pineapple-juice-baby’ line … which one gets all the time really!)

I buy several litres of pineapple juice each week from Dickson Woolies or Supabarn in the city – both have reliable year-round supplies. Coles Manuka is a different story – they have a reliable year-round supply of empty pineapple juice shelves.

Have you asked the proprietors about it, PM? They would probably be able to tell you what’s going on.

Whilst pineapple juice is a family favourite, I guess it hadn’t struck me really. But now I think about it, we have had more trouble than usual finding it in cafes and takeaways, although the supermarkets are still good.

Now the Great Banana Famine … that was something I noticed! For a while I thought I’d never taste the sweet, sticky joy of banana cake ever again, what with bananas practically worth their own weight in gold!

Something to do with the unfortunate takeover of the farmers’ cooperative Golden Circle by Heinz (?) perhaps?

I think it just gets bought out quick because its the best juice – that is fact.

I noticed they had no sardines in tomato sauce in woolies the other day. There is about 5 different brands that make it, with each shelf empty.

Who ate all the sardines?

I don’t know how close you are to Erindale Woolworths but I was there last week buying pineapple juice. They seemed to have tons of the stuff if you want to try there.
