The Michaelego hanuted house?

Im new and I see there is alot of talk about the Michaelego (sorry if i have spelt it wrong) house?

It is well know to be “hanuted” and most Canberra teens have broken in at some stage …

I was too chicken and stood on the road and watched a few years back…

But does anyone actually know the history of the house?

Just curious…

I thought it may have been a typo but its there 3 times so must be deliberate.

It’s hard to believe that there are people in this day and age who still believe in ghosts and hauntings.

But there again there are those who believe that a supreme being sent himself down from heaven to be born to a virgin, so that 30 years later he could be executed in order that he could forgive us for our sins.

Mad as.

mzih8u – hugs are good – bring it.

As i said,

I am aware that there are other threads on the subject and i was only asking to see if anyone knew the history of it and why it is aparently haunted.

Danman you sound like you need a hug.

nik73 – Trust me, I dig heritage and local natural history as much as the next guy (have a look at my flickr photostream for more) but if the OP had used the search button (which incidentally burns less calories than posting a story) as someone else had suggested, then perhaps we would not be having this conversation.

Furthermore, you state that my response will put people off posting – perhaps thats my intention – perhaps not, in any case there are plenty of resources out there, but people want informatiomn delivered to them on a silver platter these days.

Its been said before many times and Ill say it again – google is your friend.

The Michelago House has had its own topic several times, sometimes interesting, sometimes newsworthy (like the guy who blamed us when he was bailed up by the owner), othertimes just being the subject of police warnings because e talk about it so often….

If you type “Michelago” in that box at the top right, it will start you on the path of discovery.

Sorry for boring you with a repeat topic Danman… I for one had never heard of it and I found it interesting. Hopefully others won’t be put off posting by responses like yours.

Isn’t this done to death?

More interesting haunts than a derelict house full of giddy teenagers.

I don’t know much about these places but was intrigued so went looking and found these references to the places I think you’re talking about on the heritage register:

Police barracks: http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/ahdb/search.pl?mode=place_detail;place_id=1179

Hotel: http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/ahdb/search.pl?mode=place_detail;place_id=1178

If the place is haunted, it could be a victim/s of the Clark Gang of bushrangers who held up the town. The hold up was apparently centred at the inn. From http://www.kythera-family.net:

“During the years, 1865 – 1897, the Southern districts of NSW were terrorized by the activities of the notorious Clarke Gang of bushrangers. In two years of banditry, this gang of out-laws, held up mail coaches, robbed farms and took over the townships of Michelago and Nerringundah. They were probably the most bloodthirsty, freebooters in Australia’s colonial history and some 7 men, including five police officers, fell to their guns.”

From what I’ve heard, it was a hotel back in the 1800’s. Quite popular as well, as that was the main thoroughfare for Sydney to Melbourne. I believe it closed around the mid-1800’s and hasn’t been used since.

Interestingly, just north of the house on the corner is a run-down old wooden shack. Apparently that used to be a police station of some sort before the current station was built (which I think was in the early 1900’s).

You were close with the spelling – it’s Michelago 🙂
