Chief Minister Stanhope is proudly reporting that 10,000 public transport enthusiasts have already grabbed themselves a MyWay card. That’s on top of the seniors’ rollout.

He’s also got some explanation of there it’s all up to:

“To make the process even easier, pre-loaded standard adult MyWay cards with $20 worth of travel are also available from most existing ticketing agents including the 17 MyWay recharge agents, the MyWay Centre in Civic and Canberra Connect Shopfronts.”

Cash fares will continue to be available under MyWay. There is a transition period until Monday 11 April where people can use any pre-existing magnetic strip tickets, although the majority of the old magnetic strip tickets are no longer being sold. People can also transfer the value of these tickets onto MyWay cards until Thursday 30 June.

School students should either apply online for a card or visit the MyWay Centre in Civic to complete an application form for a card. They should not buy a pre-loaded card as the card needs to be programmed to charge student concession fares.

Tertiary students should apply online or complete an application form through the tertiary agents at Australian National University or University of Canberra.

Mr Stanhope said the reusable MyWay cards would make bus travel cheaper for the majority of patrons and provide important data to plan transport for the future.

“A daily fare cap will be in place for both concession and adult ticket holders, while a monthly cap will also mean that any trips taken over the capped amount during the calendar month will be free if people tag on and off,” Mr Stanhope said.

I’d be interested to find out if this is true, because my card appears to have an issue with tagging off. I’ve tried a few times and it displays the tagging on message. Of course I can’t check what is really happening because you can’t view the balance/history of your card without registering it. *facepalm*

If it displays the tagging on message when you are tagging off, then the problem is with the original tag ON!

Despite what some people believe, you do not swipe your card, nor do you wave it: to tag on or off, hold the card flat (and still) against the circle on the card reader. Your tag on is a success if the green light appears and you get the tag on success message.

And yes, I can confirm that there is currently no penalty for failing to tag off and that pre-purchased magnetic-stripe daily tickets and off-peak tickets can be used until 10 April 2011, but new ones cannot be bought.

I wish they had signs up in the buses reminding you to swipe off too. So easy to forget and then you get pinged $4.00 instead of $2.52. That will hurt.

There is amnesty on the swipe off requirement until June I think. That’s what the on-board pamphlet says anyway.

MyWay is off to a flying start, although it appears someone forgot to attach the wings.

You might be able to go to a MyWay centre to get them to scan your card to view the balance? Or you could register it…

Contrary to the bus driver I had a brief discussion with this morning, the Daily tickets are still valid. And age doesn’t make a ticket invalid. After I was told to go ask the Action staff in their office in the interchange I did, and confirmed what I knew.

Hopefully that bus driver will be shown the error of his ways, but he’s probably forced other passengers to take the next bus unnecessarily.

You would hope it doesn’t take too many $1.48 lessons for it to become habit … but yes, a big sign reminding you would be helpful to customers – something ACTION doesn’t have in numbers large enough to be able to afford to piss them off.

How can you be proud of an uptake rate when you’re offering a product with no alternative? Stanhope may as well be pleased with the number of Canberran’s who have chosen to breathe local air.

Cash will still be availiable as well.

Yeah Jess…If you can find somewhere that sells them.

I walked into a newsagent and they only had the MyWay cards.

Still better to use (and purchase) old bus tickets as most of the OLD ticket machines don’t work anymore which equals FREE RIDES!!

The magnetic strip cards are only being phased out in April, so an early uptake by that many proves that people are keen to switch?

The figures quoted here appear to be wrong though. The media release says: “More than 2,800 people have registered online for MyWay cards.” (But does he mean they registered a card they bought or that they applied for a card online???) And then “This is in addition to the more than 6,500 seniors who have transferred to the combined ACT Seniors/MyWay cards and the many people who have bought a $20 pre-loaded MyWay cards” So the figures in the media release are very vague!

How can you be proud of an uptake rate when you’re offering a product with no alternative? Stanhope may as well be pleased with the number of Canberran’s who have chosen to breathe local air.
