It’s been a day of foul weather with the possibility of worse later tonight.

Along the way readers have started sending in photos of the stormwaters. The above remarkable panorama came in from Limp Jimmy along with others of flooding in the Inner North.

And caf sent in this one of the newly formed Lake Ijong in Braddon.

KayPezz sent this one in with the following note:

As soon as I saw the Cell on the radar, I grabbed my camera gear & took off to a hill nearby (Ngunnawal) to see if I could get some pictures of it heading north. Can’t even see Black Mountain Tower due to the heavy rain!

The photo was taken around 7:30pm tonight and I managed to make it home before it hit Gungahlin.

Kazza The Blank One took this of the incoming storm:

Indeed, there sometimes appears to be a Charnwood creek which seems to rise somewhere off Cartwright street and flows down into the carpark at the rear of the shops. I guess there was once an intermittent stream running down there before surburbia existed.

Pretty much the case. There is a couple of big drain entrances behind the shops to catch the overflow down Cartwright you mentioned, which then feeds to a GPT and then into Ginninnderra Creek.

The little bridge across the stormwater drain just near the Yarra Glen Roundabout has gone.

Dunno whether it washed away, or succumbed to old age and wear and tear. I expect it caught a lot of cyclists out this morning as heaps go along the front of Curtin and then up onto Adelaide Ave there.

Any budding weather reporters out there care to have a guess at when this weather is actually going to let up .. itching for an actual summer day at this stage.

Well… since it’s this bad, you might as well pray for the worst.

White Xmas anyone?

My work in woden now has two underground swimming pools where the carpark used to be.

Now that you mention it, our (newly completed) underground car park was flooding last week when it wasn’t even raining that much – it must have been just about reclaimed by nature after yesterday. Sadly, I won’t be back until Wednesday to see the results – I’m expecting dead fish on the floor.

Arrived at work this morning (Barton) to discover the underground carpark flooded. We didn’t get much over in my part of Belco, but it must have bucketed down over this side of town.

Dickson wetland development.

I also note that with the wetland developments Sullivans Creek now takes days instead of hours to get back down to a trickle after a pour. Let’s hope the reduction in flow doesn’t lead to a nasty flood.

Judging by those photos, I’d say the wetlands redevelopment has been successful…

That’s the inlet for the new Dickson wetlands.

Hard to see in the wide photo: the water comes down the old part of the drain to the far right, hits the wider section in the middle of the photo slowing down and causing the waves due to the 50cm or so high bump on the exit, which diverts some of it through the (now blocked) trash racks just off the left side of the photo and into the pond.

The first wave where the fast water hits the slow water in a v-shape like a reverse boat wake looks like it might be surfable in a really big flood…
