The ABC has a story on one James Craig, 39, facing the court for fun had with a credit card filched from someone else’s mail:

Police allege that Craig was then able to activate the card in a St George bank branch and then use it over a two week period late last year to make 66 transactions.

They included the purchase of three cars, EFTPOS transactions, the purchase of a computer and stationary at Officeworks, and the withdrawal of cash over the counter at a St George bank branch.

The charming Mr Craig has a history of these sorts of offences and is back in custody for parole breaches.

But who has a $110,000 limit on their card?

A few times when I have been forced to call the bank about something, one of the questions they ask to try and verify my identity is “what is your cards credit limit?”. Why would I have that kind of information in my head?

Isn’t that something you’d know so you’d know how much you could spend on it?

I had a debit MasterCard show up one day. I didn’t ask for one, I got no notification of one. I simply opened an unopened letter that I assumed to be another account statement (even though I’ve clicked the “opt out of paper statements” option multiple times) which I found in the garage under my toolbox. Card had been sitting there for over 6 months with me blissfully unaware there was even one linked to my account.

I actually noticed an ATM receipt left behind a week ago which stated:

Balance: $20,000
Available Amount: $204,000
Account Type: Cheque

Which begs the question, who the hell has a $184,000 overdraft facility?

A redrawable mortgage can show up like this.

This. The average mortgage offset account would likely have a six-figure sum in it.

Well, you would have still been at risk when banks were still giving you increase to your CC limit without your consent. Thankfully not any more.

That explains why I haven’t got one of those “do you want to increase your limit to eleventy-billion” letters for a while.

This is why my credit cards are always maxed out. To stop any credit being available for thieves. True story.

CC Reforms Regulation
* Prohibiting credit card providers from making unsolicited offers in respect to increasing credit limits, unless the borrower has specifically agreed to receive such offers.

As far as I’m aware, they could only offer you an increase before – you still had to accept it. At least, that’s how my bank did it.

A redrawable mortgage can show up like this. And with a debit card, the limit is what is in the account, which is why debit is more secure when you are broke, and credit is more secure when you have cash sitting round.

This is why my credit cards are always maxed out. To stop any credit being available for thieves. True story. Nothing to do with me spending lots and not paying it off efficiently at all…………

> accused of taking a St George Visa debit card from a person’s letterbox

Debit card.

Isn’t he the Commsec guy on the news?

Tch. What a talking-to he’s going to get!

Geez… Well he didn’t do it by half now did he?

I’m glad the person whose care he stole doesn’t have to foot the bill, but the banks will have a good time trying to recoup that money!

Brazen enough to commit $100k worth of credit card fraud in person, but not smart enough to quit while he was ahead and got caught. Huh.
