One HD delayed....

Southern Cross Ten have advised that they will attempt to transmit the new One HD sports channel mid-year. I think this is a huge joke that Canberra (the nations capital) is being classified as regional and thus we have to put up with Southern Cross Broadcasting and missing out on the new ONE sport channel on HD and SD. Southern Cross advised that they do not yet have the infrustructure to broadcast HD when Ten has been broadcasting TenHD for almost a year. They have also shown no interest in trying to broadcast this channel in Standard Definition.

So no Formula 1, golf and other sports.

What a joke for anyone in the regional towns across Australia, we deserve the same sort of service….

Shouldn’t take him too long. It only took me 2 minutes.

He’s looking very hard for that free internet F1 screening.

I had heard, on another forum that a website such as http://www.myp2p.eu may be of assistance.

Having said that I would never, ever, ever endorse its use 😉

vg, where are you?!

Im with Holden Caulfield, I am really looking forward to vg posting a useable link to live, free F1 feed before the next practice starts. I was pissed that the F1 qualifying was not televised (aparently even on ONE HD) live if at all. I just hope that the SC10 mob listen to all the malcontents in the community – I know they won’t though.

I remember in 2007 SC10 claimed that they would be broadcasting Channel 10 HD “Mid next year”

Time has proven that to be an empty promise. Will their promises be proved fallible again?

I can now confirm that this “service” is about as useful than tits on a bull.

Looking forward to vg posting a quality link to the Malaysian GP with some English commentary.

If you’re that keen use a thing called the internet. You can watch everything live for free if you look hard enough

Feel free to post up a link right now then Sherlock!

Yep it sucks for sure. Expect it mid year:

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=75374

SCTen included a “One is coming” ad during the Simpsons on Friday night. So’s Christmas. I wonder which one we’ll get first?

What a joke. You Can’t watch sport like F1 at a decent hour, it is put on 5 hours delayed on a Sunday night. Are they having a laugh???? Only Laugh they get out of me with their terrible shows on instead.

The whole reason ten has f1 is so that it is fair for the whole community, not just pay tv.

Yes they do a good job for the Aus gp but apart from that terrible. Give it to Foxtel, may cost but then every1 can see it at the same time Nation wide.

Just can’t see 10’s logic. Gloabally the most watched sporting event and we cant watch it live??? If questions have to be asked about small numbers at aussie f1, I blame channel 10. If it is on live and correctly advertised, more people would become interested…

Yeah, both people that watch the F1 are disrupted.

You are kidding yourself. The most globally watched sporting event is the Olympics then the World Cup. Both are live.

If the F1 thing was such an issue you would hear a larger hue and cry. We don’t.

If you’re that keen use a thing called the internet. You can watch everything live for free if you look hard enough

there was another forum running info on the same issue, they have created a petition online that will be sent to both SC Ten and Ten. here is the link to the petition:

I have just read and signed the online petition:

“OneHD for Southern Cross viewers”

hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition
service, at:

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/1HD4SC10/

I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might
agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider
signing yourself.

Bump for gertel and post #31.

/me puts request for private message functionality in RA suggestion box.

Cheers, I’ll give that a whirl, even though I know they will handpass it straight to SCTen.

I see that costs $20 per year (US$ presumably) … is it worth the cash? How do they present the feed (QuickTime, wmv etc)? Are there any technical issues one might face (Mac OS 10.5.6 user)?

Holden Caulfield11:04 am 30 Mar 09

Can’t believe I missed this thread. As an AFL/F1 fan I’ll be pretty chuffed when we finally get OneHD.

I just rang Sotuhern Cross Ten and was told they’re testing everything and it’s a big job, yada, yada, yada … expect to lanuch mid-year. Which is nothing new given the first post above.

It really shits me, too, that TV stations don’t publish contact email addresses (for obvious reasons I guess, haha) … but if anyone knows of a SCTen email address please pass it on so we can give the pricks as much frustration as they give us!

Gungahlin Al12:54 pm 29 Mar 09

Sucks. And stuck at work with no way to keep an eye on the motorracing. You’d think ten.com.au would also have streaming? Nooo. And does Southern Cross have an email address or online comment form via which one can complain? Nooo. Don’t want any of that nasty customer feedback stuff now do we?

Yet they have ABC there showing them how to do it all right, with among the best online services in the WORLD, and still they can’t figure out what century they are in.

Sunday. The Grand Prix is on Sunday. Which is now today… so maybe I’ll go turn on a TV.

If you are posting at 1254 the sure way to see if it started at 1200 would be to….errrrr……turn on a TV?

I know its not HD but the Grand Prix appears to be showing from 12pm – 7pm on SCTen. Am I missing something? Hopefully not, I’m planning to watch the Grand Prix.

miz > depending on the manufacturer, perhaps a firmware update later will be available to make your set top box ‘freeview compliant’

Cripes, no, don’t install an update that does that. As discussed above, a freeview compliant box is just a crippled non-freeview compliant box with an extra EPG. Don’t fall for the marketing crap.

Cheers montana 🙂 I imagine at this rate it will be time for a new one when they do get their act together!

Sadly I am not very techy (but do love telly, and detest getting ripped off) so I am very grateful for insights from people such as yourself and others on sites like this one.

miz > depending on the manufacturer, perhaps a firmware update later will be available to make your set top box ‘freeview compliant’

for anyone else, i would hold out on buying a set top box until freeview get their act together.

Damn, I bought a set top box over the Xmas hold after seeing the freeview ads. If it weren’t for Red Dwarf on ABC2, I would be feeling TOTALLY gypped right now. Smeg heads.

we missed out on the whole summer of cricket in High definition.

and we had to put up with mark taylor “if you got a HD tv, you can enjoy the glorious pictures..” sorry not if you live in canberra.

according to the freeview website, Canberra is classed as a metropolitan city.

but its the only metropolitan city to have to put up with regional stations like SC10, prime and WIN.

what gives?

From what I’ve been able to glean, the current EPG won’t actually change or break (any more than it’s broken currently, at least) – they’re just adding a new parallel one which looks all pretty and nice but is sourced from exactly the same data.

Oh, and you missed the most important thing: “Freeview” branded boxes won’t be able to fast-forward through commercials at the same rate as the current non-crap boxes.

Ah, I had forgotten about not being able to skip ads on Freeview.

I heard that non-Freeview boxes were going to have the EPG restricted to Now and Next, instead of the 7-day EPG that some channels are already giving us. While this article seems to say otherwise, if you read closely it doesn’t ACTUALLY say that the current EPG won’t be restricted to Now and Next: http://www.pcauthority.com.au/BlogEntry/136503,freeview-confirms-new-aussie-epg-is-backwards-compatible-coz-its-nothing-but-a-skin.aspx

“..Freeview’s Parkes confirmed that Australia’s television networks will continue to embed an EPG in the broadcast signal, which means no-one will lose access to the EPG when the new Freeview EPG interface is released…. What’s more, the two EPG services will be compiled from exactly the same data.. “

Nothing there says that they’re going to show 7 days on the existing EPG, which uses EIT.

Even the phrase “nothing is encrypted” in that article could refer only to the existing EIT EPG – the MHEG5 EPG supported by Freeview devices might be encrypted, so non-Freeview boxes can’t use it. FYI – no current hardware in Aus supports MHEG5 that I’m aware of.

Freeview is a backwards step, not the forwards one the ads suggest. They want to break the EPG functionality, in return for the commercial networks giving you an extra channel. Apart from that, it’s nothing new.

From what I’ve been able to glean, the current EPG won’t actually change or break (any more than it’s broken currently, at least) – they’re just adding a new parallel one which looks all pretty and nice but is sourced from exactly the same data (I don’t have the article link, but the quote was from the Freeview CEO, if I recall). That means that it will still be totally wrong because, through incompetence or malice, Ten can’t manage to make The Biggest Loser not run 15 minutes overtime.

Oh, and you missed the most important thing: “Freeview” branded boxes won’t be able to fast-forward through commercials at the same rate as the current non-crap boxes. From memory, they’ll be limited to going through at 3x the speed (compared to current ones which have no limit, and some which will actually detect the end of the ad-break and jump straight to it). Thank god they’ve seen fit to provide us with that “service”.

Freeview: you get what you pay for.

Well freeview is basically 3 channels from each of the existing networks. The majority will be pretty much the same thing on all three channels, except ABC and SBS with ABC2 and SBS World News. Last I saw, Southern Cross weren’t committing to retransmitting One, and their three channels were going to be SCTen, SCTenHD and SCTenSD. Though from memory SCTen don’t even transmit their sound in Stereo for their current analogue channel, maybe in 5 years we might get full HD services.

http://www.watchf1.net/ Was pretty good value last F1 season. The race was half over by the time Ten bothered to start their delayed broadcast.

The Government should grow some…. and tell these FTA networks “Use it or loose it!”.

Absolute bull***t if you ask me!!!! what’d I buy a full HD lcd for? I really wanted to watch F1 LIVE for a change as they have been doing in Melbourne for the past year but nooooo Canberra is classified as “regional” please!!!! don’t insult our integrity it’s all about the revenue (or lack of) why Canberra misses out YET AGAIN!!!! where are the pollies when we need them….

aaaaaaaargh don’t get me started on Southern Cross Ten and their fcuking around with One/TenHD. As watching motorsport is my only vice (ahem) it is sooo frustrating that they won’t (not can’t) retransmit the One feed on their HD channel instead of a stupid loop of pretty pictures of country towns which arn’t able to watch the same programs as the Big Smoke (wasn’t that what Aggregation in 1989 was supposed to bring us?). Bloody Maquarie bank owned wnakers. I seriously know of at least 8 motoring related businesses which would love to advertise on ONE but SCTen are missing out on it all.

SCTen could easily transmit One on their virtually unused HD channel and insert the dull loop into ad spaces like they used to do with some programs last year – even if they didn;t get ad revenue now at least they are building interest and an audience in preparation for the switch-on. But no, they won’t. ONE could have a streaming TV channel, where all with Net access could watch it and advertisers get extra viewers -but no.

And a promise of midyear of Canberra? I’ll believe it when I see it – not likely given SCTen’s track record.

SC are full of it. They managed to broadcast two seperate ‘channels’ a year or two ago when they had the ‘regular’ Ten on Channel 5 and ‘MyTalk’ on 55 (although the latter was a news/weather thing that was mainly text and rarely updated, with a promo loop running in the corner). They have also shown in the past that they can broadcast HD programs on Channel 50 when that program was available in HD (House, NCIS etc). Unfortunately since the start of 2009 Channel 50 has been that damn nature loop.

There have been several mentions across various sites that the delay in giving Regional Viewers ‘One’ is due to their inability to insert local advertising into the channel – something which they manage to do on the regular Channel Ten feed that we get on Channel 5.

Freeview is a backwards step, not the forwards one the ads suggest. They want to break the EPG functionality, in return for the commercial networks giving you an extra channel. Apart from that, it’s nothing new.

Except Ch 9 has no plans nor intention to start another channel, and Ch 10 .. well, where do we start? Are they even meeting their quota of HD shows? Shows that were on HD a couple of months ago aren’t even on anymore .. it’s just Demo Reel any time I’ve looked. Then Ch 7 is part of the group suing iiNet for referring allegations of criminal activity to the police, instead of acting as judge, jury and executioner and doing whatever they’re told do.

I’d like to see the govt switch off analogue end of this year, and govt mandate 3 TV channels per network – main channel HD, main channel SD (exact same content as HD), and extra HD. HD STBs will be about $80 by then for a basic unit, so price isn’t a great barrier to entry. Let ABC and the SBS open as many more channels as they can afford (which won’t be many.) Offer at least one local community TV station license per transmission area, just like radio has done for decades. EG, a national opportunity for some Channel 31’s. (Anyone remember Optus’ community TV for Melbourne and maybe Sydney when their pay network started in 1994ish? It seemed like a great idea.)

Hopeless. All these ads on TV about freeview, and we get nothing. What a joke.

Sepi, I’d reckon Channel 10’s definition of “regional” would have something to do with the amount of revenue generated by the local advertising market, which would thus dictate the amount of resources they pour into the local broadcast infrastructure.

… still sucks though.

Bugger, I was actually looking forward to that. :/

Calwell does (for medical purposes, apparently).
http://the-riotact.com/?p=6318

Someone needs to come up with an official definition of ‘regional’. They just pick and choose as it suits them. And we seem to lose out either way.

We are regional when it comes to services like this, and yet we don’t qualify for the grants to attract GPs that regional areas get.

Growling Ferret3:41 pm 26 Mar 09

Its a disgrace.

They should at least show it in SD, or One HD should be shown of Fox – actually, can anyone confirm if One HD is carried in the Foxtel HD package?

It’s a bummer 🙁

What do you expect from the network which brings us excellent television like, Big Brother, So You Think You Can Dance……etc.

Southern Cross – the same channel that shown semi porn ads for phone chat lines during the NYE fireworks – great for the kids to watch 🙁

I gave up on the commercial channels long ago, they treat the public with contempt, only cater for the brain dead dumbed down segment of the population and then genuinely wonder why their audiences fall lower and lower….
