My daughter is thinking of buying in Goulburn.

We were wondering if anyone knew if there was a bus that goes Goulburn – Canberra for those that work in the ACT?

A modern common rail or direct injection diesel car (eg hyundai I30, VW polo? would easily rival a 250 bike on a goulburn commute.

For a while we had a scooter and a 1.1litre car. The car used about 1/3 more petrol than the scooter. And fits a lot more groceries!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to type your comments and opinions 🙂

It is much appreciated 🙂

One option maybe worth a look at, is Greyhound or some other coachline that travels from Jolimont to Sydney, via Goulburn. I was on a bus to Sydney once, when a lady who’d obviously just come from work joined the bus bound for goulburn, she was obviously a regular traveller, given her conversation with the driver throughout the trip.

Upon checking the prices, it looks to be about the same as Murrays, however you may find you can get a commuter deal if you pre-pay for a month in advance or purchase a ‘pass’.

When i was a kid my Dad used to have reason to visit the Goulburn races. He said that if you considered a map of Australia in the shape of a horse, Goulburn would be found just under the tail

Spending 3 hours a day commuting to work. How much is 15 hours a week worth to a person? Nothing if it’s spent commuting. And the monetory cost is considerable. Get a second part time job to pay off a larger mortgage closer to where you work if this is the reason for picking Goulburn.

Just a bit of unsolicited advice, worth nothing, and as astrojax points out not the point of the post but not totally unrelated.

Does a scooter really do much better fuel economy wise that a $12990 drive away buzz box on a high speed cruise? I wouldn’t have thoght there’d be much in it.

why would you move to goulburn if your job is in canberra?

perhaps her longer term aspirations are? i didn’t think this a forum questioning the motives, just the transport options.

I’d get a motor bike – even a good scooter on the markets these days are very capable inter-town transport solutions (i oughta write catalogues) and would be a cheap alternative, while being much more flexible – if more chilly and damp on some occasions… : )

Has she ever actually been to that shithole?

What? To find out that it isn’t one? I had always thought I wouldn’t want to move to Goulburn, but my job takes me there a few times a month and I’m really starting to like it.

I imagine, though, that the only practical option is to car pool. I’m not sure how useful it is, but I know of two sites where you can meet up with carpoolers:

Has she ever actually been to that shithole?

Maybe to get closer to Todd’s family?

Why? The prices are quite high in Goulburn, and the travel costs would far outweigh any slight saving. You need to do a proper cost-benefit analysis.

Or you could just stick a sign out on the Federal hwy to get the attention of other long distance commuters in need of someone to keep them awake…

*hears the sounds of banjos playing deliverance* captains flat? *scoff*

why would you move to goulburn if your job is in canberra? if your daughter had transport, then sure, if it means big savings in accomodation…which i doubt considering the cost of getting to and from goulburn. a nightly bus at $24.20 a pop is a hell of alot to pay 5 days a week, not to mention that there is no bus in the morning.

Goulburn is perhaps the perfect place to live if you want a satellite town 100km away and like driving on dual carriageway.

However, if you want someplace with a commuter bus service that isn’t about to go away, try Yass or Murrumbateman.

If you want to save on the upfront cost of the house and land, and have cash left over to buy a car, try Captains Flat.

Bowman’s bus lines started a service from Goulburn to Canberra in March last year. It wasn’t supported by commuters and this service has since stopped.

Murrays have a bus running nightly from the Jolly PO to Goulburn. It leaves at 6.00 pm and gets to Goulburn at 7.10. It costs $24.20 a go.

I haven’t found anything transport option that would get your daughter into Canberra in the first place.

Perhaps she could carpool with someone?
