The ACT Government is drip feeding quite a lot of its budget in advance. One way to dominate the local news cycle we suppose and it’s not as if the financial markets care much.

The latest is Chief Minister Stanhope promising to spend $12 million sprucing up the paving and street furniture around the iconic Sydney and Melbourne buildings:

“This year’s Budget will provide $12 million over four years for priority upgrades to the City Centre focusing on East and West Rows,” Mr Stanhope said. “This targeted investment will encourage more visitors, tourists and trade in the City Centre, which in turn will boost business activity and help to protect jobs.

“Canberra’s iconic Sydney and Melbourne Buildings will benefit from improved paving and new street furniture.

Bear in mind the current state of Civic is apparently the “after” photo following $19 million in spending investment.

Trivia: East Timor’s National Parliament Building in Dili looks very similar to the Sydney and Melbourne buildings (as they were before the balconies were enclosed, anyway). It’s also in better repair!

Money for Civic? Maybe they’ll buy some more of those incomprehensible sheep.

Well it’s great fun for the spending ministers.

Sucks to be the treasurer though.

Already had the announcement about the Gungahlin Enclosed Oval funding too.

Is it politically wise to be feeding out all the good news now – there’ll be nothing left on budget day to give out except the bad news!

Upgraded paving and seating won’t fix the insufficient, crappy and expensive parking problems that drove us away from Civic in the first place.

They need to just gut the interior of the Sydney and Melbourne buildings and build some commercial and residential highrises, while keeping the current external street look of the buildings. Those back alleys are just disgusting
