Land tax mayhem

I know that the budget is stressed and that Jon has maxed out the ACT credit cards but crikey!!!

I purchased an investment property in the New Acton development and immediately received a Land Tax notice for $100,000.00 representing about 40% of the value of my investment.

When I made enquiries with the revenue office concerning this notice I was informed that it was a “computer glitch” fair enough, I thought. This was in March.

BIG GLITCH still hasn’t been fixed c’mon Jon “fair suck of the sav” mate!!!

You really should institute a “swear jar” in the Rates and Land Tax area of the Revenue Office it would produce more revenue than trying to “rip off” your residents!

In that case $26k would be correct. UV of $2.1m!! was this a residential block?

The property in question had an unimproved land value of 2.1M. Clearly someone has tapped the wrong calculator keys.

Not likely V8. For example (also from allhomes) 31 Endeavour Street Red Hill, at $2,495,000, would cop a land tax bill of $8,762 pa. If you’re in the market for an investment property with a $26k land tax bill, you can just cry in your caviar.

I looked at a place that’s currently for sale on allhomes the other day, where the estimated yearly land tax is a smidge over $26k per year. And that doesn’t seem to be an error.

Mistakes like really indicate how poor the IT systems that your confidential data is held on, and personally scares the sh1t outta me.
This indicates a general lack of upkeep or understanding on how these applications and databases are running.

Also mind you, Computer glitches are always HUMAN ERROR. Anyway you look at it. Placing blame on computer systems is an easy out for them. Humans designed computers hence it is a human glitch, not a computer glitch.

Hiring good system administrators and programers is a good start. I bet the system that all your data is very legacy (maybe Mainframe) which is not uncommon for all government departments.

I would write a letter to the department head and have them confirm in writing expecting they have resolved the problem and it will not happen again, and express concerns for others that may have not actually known it was a computer glitch and payed the ‘tax’.
