Learning to rollerblade in Canberra?

Hello all,

Long time lurker and first time poster here…

In my quest for fitness I have decided to give roller blading a go..problem is, where in the Nation’s Capital can I find roller blading group lessons? Nowhere, it seems!

The skate place in Braddon only does one on one lessons, and they won’t be starting until November. Both the YMCA and YWCA can’t help..

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi there!

I realise that this is a fairly old thread, but with an increasing interest in rollerblading since 2020 I wanted to put it out there that I have started a small inline skate school which operates in Canberra. I am a SkateIA qualified instructor and have options for group and private lessons. My goal is to help build up the inline skate community here in Canberra and help beginners become more confident on skates. More information can be found on the website: https://www.saturnskateschool.com/

Feel free to submit a form through the website if you have any questions or if you’d just like to chat about skating 🙂

Thank you!

well given your user name is a girls name you can skip the hardest part of learning to rollerblade which is telling your parents you are gay.

as for the rest of the lessons I have got no idea.

Jase and I spend alot of time rollerblading… dont we darling ?

P.S. – I stand up to pee

Wait until Christmas. Go out onto the suburban bike paths and put on your new rollerblades and wait for some 10-year old to zoom past, feel sorry for you, and teach you how to do it.

It worked for us.

The smooth concrete paths on the south side of LBG are a good place, too – between the High Court and NLA.

There’s a small group (sometimes only one or two) of people that rollerblade around New Parliament House early on Wednesday mornings (seen them there as early as 6am, maybe even earlier). Don’t know who they are or if they give lessons but maybe you could go there and talk to them and find out.

Find someone who’s a better skater than you and skate with them.. which is pretty much what everyone else said. ^^

Get all the protective gear find a nice clear open space (like the futsal court) and stumble around till you get used to it, then expand to other locations. It’s similar to ice skating so you could try ice skating lessons.
I doubt the rollerderby girls could help as they use skates not blades.
ACT Inline hockey might know someone who conducts lessons http://www.actilha.com.au

Frankly one on one lessons would be better than group lessons if you can hold out till straightlines start again.

That’s a shame about YMCA, years ago when the rollerblading kick started up, they did do lessons at the city premises. It was excellent, learned all kinds of things you wouldn’t pick up on your own. The trainers were ski instructors, so maybe, perhaps, when spring comes they’ll be offering lessons?

example of what we learned: they taught us to get more stability when going over bumps etc, and we tested it by pushing a commercial broom handle under a giant brown doormat in the hall, and blading over that.

Hmmm, sounds like someone is repressed.

The folks at Canberra Roller Derby League may have some info.

Nice folks too.

Are you sure you need lessons? What about just going with a friend who knows some of the tricks of the trade and just muck about in a quiet car park for an hour or so? Did you do rollerskating as a kid? It’s not much different.
