Recommended schools?

We currently live in Belconnen and are planning to move to the Woden/Weston area in the next couple of years. We both work in Woden and have children attend childcare in the area and would like to enrol our eldest child in a preschool here mainly for logistical reasons (ie. picking up after school) and for a smoother move to primary school.

As is expected, we are are having problems getting our son into any of these preschools because we are out-of-area. Does anybody have any suggestions? Has anybody used the new P-2 schools and what do you think of it? Any recommendations for primary schools (preferably non-open plan)?

Primary schools:
Arawang if in Weston Creek (Warramanga / Fisher area) is quite good. The teachers there seem quite committed.

Hughes Primary School (Woden area) offers a really interesting view to the world as it houses many international and English as a Second Language kids. That really opens little minds the world around them and teaches them many early lessons about other cultures.

Secondary Schools:
Well, only as good as the kids we send there =)

Special dishonourable mention though for Stromlo High School (Weston Creek area) with a culture of drugs, violence (little sister had a knife held to her neck) and – get this – smoke breaks. Yes, Stromlo made international news (BBC) when it permitted smoke breaks for a student because she was ‘addicted to nicotine’.

Good lord.
