On moving south...

Well the secret is out. We are selling up on the northside and moving south.

The neighbours won’t speak to us and our friends have organised the last supper.

I thought that all the north-south bagging was just a joke but it seems in Canberra..never the twain will meet.

Or are northeners just insecure?

I’ve tried having relationships with girls living northside twice but always entered into them thinking such alliances could never survive the great north-south divide.
And I was right.
As a former big city resident, I was always amused by the Watson girl I was wooing expressing constant amazement about “how far you’ve come to see me”.
I was then living in Holder (it’s the suburb right next to F*#ker).

re #6, I thought the Pros were in Fyshwick

FC re #6 there are lots of cons, particularly in Kambah.

welcome to the brightside

As a Westie, I can say the neighbours around here are very friendly… I’ve lived here just over 2 years, and know nearly everyone in the streets around me… The people across the road even look after the house when we are out… Telling me if anyone came knocking, and generally scare off dodgy looking people… Which sadly, one was my brother…. lol

And northsiders are just insecure!

I lived in Tuggeranong for 25 years – I thought it was great while I was there. I moved to the northside about 7 years ago and was amazed at the sense of community I found. I could never move back.

When I was boss of trolley collecting at Coolo in 1993 the local kids all called themselves westies.

In the 80’s here westies were all over the suburbs, bred in image and attitude from the Western Sydney (Balmain etc) crowd that were divided with the Silvertails (is that it or something similar?) (northern Sydney – Manly etc).

But if I had been in Weston Creek as a teen I would have been tempted to call myself a westie for sure (but they aren’t the “westie” I think of nor probably demographically correct), I looked it for the most part and hung with many and I’m sure I did get called one sometimes and I’ve never lived west.

oaks estate is technically south as well (wrong side of the tracks from qbn and about as impressive as the causeway)

This North/South thing has been going on for as long as I can remember, and that’s a long time. The South side people always considered themselves a better and wealthier class than the Northerners because the South had Griffith, Red Hill, the embassies, the Lodge, Parliament House and all those high brow social people who drank champers and had cocktail parties etc.
The North, however, was populated by the workers and housed the retail center (Civic), Police, Hospital, Canberra High and all those nice earthy things. It’s not that one side is better than the other, they are just different.
(PS: The Southerners would never acknowledge the existence of the Causeway!)

just like the north gloss over charnwood!

I lived in Banks for a couple of years. It is actually not a bad suburb at all. And being on the edge of town you only have to deal with the local idiots (a problem all suburbs have), rather then too many passers-by (since people tend to head toward the middle not the edges).

The only real draw back was how far it was from many things I find it necessary to visit, and frankly Gungahlin suffers that issue just as bad.

Same deal in our street – we still get together to mark the 17th of January with a barbie. All except one house where the people have since moved and somehow, although we invite the new residents they seem to stay away. The old owners were weird too. My neighbour and I saved their place from burning down that afternoon (we were the only two people who decided to stay), and they never said anything afterwards – not a word.

we are moving deeper south, away from kambah and into deeper territory. we were surprised at the open attitude and friendliness that we encountered, even when we were at the exhibitions. The opposite was felt when we were looking on the northside, people seem far too wrapped up in their lives in the old north. We will travel back to kambah for the events like the 17th party, someone suggested it be called the phoenix party – we survived and were stronger for the experience.

peterh, I could not agree more, that was exactly the situation here, lived as neighbours for about 5 years but in the time since the fires we’ve become much more socially connected, having regular bbqs and get-togethers for birthdays or special events.

It’s Weston Creek and most of Belco is further west

Peter H +1. Despite the small moronic element in Tuggers the area has a lot going for it, we looked at Gungahlin when it was going up and promptly walked away, we have no regrets that we stayed south.

Western Creek isn’t south, its “Westside”.

weston creek and areas of tuggeranong became far better at neighbor relations after the fires. we all checked that everyone was ok, speaking to people we had lived near for several years for the very first time. The fires made some communities much closer. Others, there was never any hope. The northside is ok for those who live there, but i have moved south a long time ago, and much prefer the southside. There is something about the south that is attractive. Maybe the views of the brindies with snow on them, the closeness of the green areas like tidbinbilla, corin forest etc play a part, but the neighborhoods seem friendlier.

I live in Weston Creek, and talk to my neighbours just fine.
Hell, we have barbeques together with people from up to about six doors down (excluding a few of the less sociable ones).
Maybe you just don’t get along with your specific neighbours?

Westen Creek is good 10-15min to the city, central to all parts of Canberra, “neighbors not talking to ya thats just Canberra”

So true. Kinda like there’s northside and then ‘f*ck me, I didn’t realise Canberra and Yass were joined’!

Yeah the southside is quite varied.
Griffih, Kambah, the creek, bonython, Banks.
all having different pros and cons.

Depends where you’re moving to… there’s “southside” and then there’s “the deep south”.

VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy9:38 am 30 Jun 09

Each side has something going for it. Personally I prefer southside, but live in neither.

“I thought that all the north-south bagging was just a joke but it seems in Canberra..never the twain will meet.

Don’t worry, it’s just the northerners, the southerners aren’t like that at all.

Interested in a nice bridge? Going cheap.

…didn’t we already have this moronic topic the other week?

Yes bluebell it is true, morons are morons and when you speak to morons most likely morons will say something moronic and expose their moronic attitudes.

Personally I think anyone outside of O’Connor/Turner are the enemy. 2602 REPREZENT!

I went to Kambah on Sunday- first time in 8 years that I have been further south then Woden. It was nice. I would do it again.
