Lowbrow art wanted

I am currently drumming up artists interested in showing pieces in a lowbrow collaborative art exhibition.

What is lowbrow? It’s a pretty broad term that covers art which is underground, not ‘highbrow’…so this includes street, cartoon, graf, subculture art, punk, rockabilly, hot-rods…It can pretty much be in any medium too- from scultpure to spray paint, photography, painting, collage…

The type of artists I’d love to hear from include:

  • pinstripers (hot rods/vintage cars etc)
  • graffiti artists (that might have photos or want to do demos/translate work to canvas for exhibition)
  • street artists
  • photographers that concentrate on underground subculture subjects
  • stencil artists
  • cartoonists
  • painters/sculptors etc that incorporate lowbrow themes and imagery.

Anybody who is interested in exhibiting art in this style should contact me christie.thompson@bigpond.com.au for more info.

‘Lowbrow’ is not necessarily a value judgement on the art itself. It is an art movement that has increasingly found acceptance among mainstream art movements. So sure, in one sense you could say that stencil and graffiti are not ‘lowbrow’, but they are/were definitely aspects of the movement termed ‘lowbrow’…so I’m not entirely sure what your comment is suppposed to mean, or if you are just trying to be disparaging towards the exhibition idea…?

Stencil and graffiti aren’t regarded as lowbrow any more!

Your best frame of reference is to look at a mag like Juxtapoz…or wiki ‘lowbrow’.

Seriously though, are you talking more like Melbourne’s Catrabbit \ Ghost Patrol and Miso?

While we’re at it… Bindeez?

And those pictures made with pins on a board and string between them.

Skidbladnir: Also three plaster ducks.

Dogs playing playing poker, and velvet pictures of sad clowns, as far as the eye can see…

Any art I do is pretty low brow. Can’t really imagine anyone wanting to look at it though…

Lowbrow… that had me thinking of the art they sell in Kmart… like that skeleton sitting on the toilet.

Sounds awesome, good luck.
