1. An evening with Neil deGrasse Tyson at Llewellyn Hall
Cashed up cosmic nerds, this is really happening. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is in Canberra this Sunday evening at Llewellyn Hall. Tickets are a hefty $158.84, so I reckon watching re-runs of Cosmos on Sunday is a decent substitute. More info.

2. Sydney Comedy Festival showcase at Canberra Theatre Centre
The crème de la crème of the 2015 Sydney Comedy Festival right on your doorstep? Sounds good to me. This year’s lineup features Tommy Dean, Jacques Barrett and Randy. One show only, this Friday night at 8pm. More info.

3. World record stargazing attempt at ANU
Another space-related event at ANU’s Fellows Oval this Friday from 6pm. Mount Stromlo Observatory is attempting to break two Guinness world records for stargazing. Everyone who wants to participate will need to be looking through a telescope at a pre-determined time during the evening, so bring your own or get in early to buy one on the night. More info.

4. Art for Charity to raise funds for refugee school
Head to the Polish Club this Saturday evening for Art for Charity, an arts and music event raising money for a refugee school in Indonesia. There will be poetry, music, dancing, interactive art installations and a presentation by one of the school’s founding members, Muzafar Ali. Entry is by a minimum $15 donation and the festivities kick off at 6pm. More info.

5. Geoscience Australia open day
Meet the robot that makes GPS more accurate, find out how earthquakes are detected, pan for gold or become a seafloor detective at Geoscience Australia’s open day, this Sunday from 10am. Talk to a real geoscientist, learn about geoscience careers and find out what goes on in Geoscience Australia’s mysterious building. More info.

Presented by Canberra’s Latin American embassies, the Latin American Film Festival is a free event that features some of the most exciting and creative Latin American productions in recent years. Running until 1 September at the National Gallery, each film is screened twice a day and subtitled in English. More info.

7. Website workshop – Discovering Anzacs at the National Archives
Get a free hands-on tutorial in using Discovering Anzacs to find the Anzac in your family. The National Archives’ Emma Diamond will take you step by step through the process and give handy hints along the way. Don’t forget to bring your digital device. It’s on Sunday 23 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. More info.

8. ACT Pinball Championships
Fancy yourself a bit of a pinball superstar? Put your skills to the test at the inaugural ACT Pinball Championships, to be held this weekend as part of the Big Boys Toys Expo at EPIC. Qualifying starts at 10am on Saturday, with the winner crowned on Sunday. More info.

9. Tuggeranong Hawks brown and gold ball at the Southern Cross Club
The Tuggeranong Hawks will host its first annual ball this Saturday 22nd August at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club. There will be live music, a three-course meal and drinks. More info.

10. Canberra Psychic Expo 2015
The organisers of this event describe it as “Three huge days of fantastic spiritual and alternative brilliance.” Meet celebrity psychic mediums, inspirational speakers, healers, readers, life coaches and more. It’s on at EPIC from Friday to Sunday. More info.

11. Springtime antiques and collectibles fair at Albert Hall
The perfect opportunity to buy high-quality antiques and collectables at realistic prices. If antiques aren’t your thing, perhaps the home-made cakes, slices and light lunches will be. The fair stars at 6pm Friday and runs all weekend. Entry is $7 with proceeds helping the Snowy Hydro SouthCare medical rescue helicopter service. More info.

Kaninjaku exhibition

12. Kaninjaku: Stories from the Canning Stock Route
The Canning Stock Route was developed on Aboriginal homelands as mining and pastoral industries expanded in Western Australia. This exhibition is the story of the Canning, told from the perspectives of the Aboriginal people whose country it crossed. It’s only been open for a few weeks. See it at the Gallery of First Australians at the National Museum of Australia. Entry is free. More info.

13. Urban soul launch party at Treehouse
Treehouse’s urban soul launch party on Saturday night features DJ Smoking Joe, the Guinness world record holder for the longest DJ set in history (seven days). The party starts at 9pm and there are best-dressed prizes for anyone dressed in black and gold. More info.
