Men's cuts?

Hi All,

So I’m new to Canberra and I’m chasing a good men’s hairdresser with experience with difficult/different cuts. I’m definately not up for a Barber (my hair is quite wavy and I have somewhat of a fringe), and don’t mind so much on where or price.

Any suggestions?!

Yes, definitely worth trying Paulie if you can. He’s really popular though so you might want to phone first – 6285 1995.

So noted (plus Nambucco’s comment). Thanks!

Or spend some money on a good set of clippers and do it yourself.

A half decent set of clippers (with all the attendant attachments) shouldn’t cost more than about $50.00 at somewhere like Myers. I used to do my own buzz-cut for a while until my wife confided in me that she felt I looked a bit like a prison escapee … not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your profession – but I drew the line when she started referring to nookie as a “conjugal visit”.

Used to use Heinz at Cook. Wouldn’t shut up but tremendous cuts. He has now retired (still had a sign in his shop telling how much it was for a ‘flat top’!).

Dom’s at Dickson are also tremendous.

Or spend some money on a good set of clippers and do it yourself. Crew cuts are still trendy apparently

Always Paul at Woden tradies.

Paul at the Tradies Club in Woden.

I tried to make a booking with this bloke but he was too busy pumping himself up as ‘the best hairdresser in Canberra’ due to being booked up for a couple of days and didn’t seem interested at all in taking my booking.

He wanted me to go away and call to make the booking. Maybe it’s just me, but there seems to be some element of logic missing there. I left but never rang back to book and went to O’Connor instead. Not a hair-stylist, more of a barber. But great result for not much cash.

Oh, wait a minute. You said ‘Woden’. Scratch that. It was the Dickson Tradies guy that didn’t want my business. I must try Woden instead. Tomorrow if I can swing it. Thanks for the heads-up (no pun intended), misspris.

+1 for Lee at Axis.

Good cut. It doesn’t last 2 weeks and then need another cut. Also, she doesn’t indulge in inane chatter, just lets you read your mag or sit their gazing into space, whatever you want.

ck already recommended axis, on barry drive – but i’d argue his boss, gianni ciacia is the best cutter

I’d agree astro. Gianni had been cutting my hair for more than 18 years – since he was in the small salon at the ANU union. I because my work meant it was almost impossible to keep an appoimntment with Gianni and Lee will usually squeeze me in on 24-48 hours notice.

Been going there for years, the guys are good

ck already recommended axis, on barry drive – but i’d argue his boss, gianni ciacia is the best cutter (well, since jo left next too many years ago now to remember – she was brilliant! damn you england, damn you to hell for stealing her away…)

ask for gianni, but be prepared to wait.

I would also recommend Hair Nitesh at Belconnen very highly. Fantastic people who take a lot of pride in their work and produce real quality. I’ve never been somewhere where a short back and sides/crew cut takes 30+ mins. Why? Because they do it properly and for someone with seriously dense/thick (and fast growing) hair like mine it’s important because it looks stupid if it’s even a little bit uneven (like the 5 min job Just Cuts gives). I guess they have lots of experience with dense/thick hair given they started out in Fiji. At $25 or thereabouts it is pretty good value and with an appointment you can usually walk straight in.

I used to go to the guy at O’Connor. Nice bloke and a great price but you get what you pay for and the worst thing there is it is usually so busy that I would often spend over an 90 mins waiting.

My son likes the men’s hairdressers at the rear of Roger David in the Hyperdome, and he is really really ‘thing’ about his hair (far more than my girls!).

I used to go there and was always happy with the result. Only stopped going there as I now work in the City and find it hard to get back to Tuggers before they close, and ended up having to find a new place in the city.

There is a crumpled old man at the back of the O’Connor shops whom I’m sure many Rioters know. I’m unaware of this name, but he’s been there for decades.

He’s old-style. He wears the same, faded-beige safari suit (at least, it looks like a safari suit) every day. He posts pictures of topless women on the walls, and the reading material he provides clients is similar. He still charges $10 for a cut (it was $9 for me earlier this year). God knows how he afford to make ends meet. He told me once the landlord gives him a special deal. Perhaps a Tax Office auditor would like to visit.

He won’t be able to help a metrosexual like the boy who posted this thread, though. He’s relatively busy sawing his way through the hair of what seems to be most of Canberra’s unemployed men. There are fairly lengthy queues some mornings. He likes crew cuts. Trims are okay. Definitely no cuts that rely on a bit of a “zhuzh”.

I go to Fuse in Civic, costs about $50 for a mens cut from memory.

I dont really give a shit, try putting a bowl on your head and cutting around it.

Lee at Axis on Barry Drive in the city does a great mens cut – but not on a budget.

I have found that the best bet is to find a barber/hairdresser you are comfortable with and give them plenty of repeat business – with time they will get to know what you like and don’t like – it’s definately better than going in cold everytime you need a clip.

Martinos in Civic is great. Always get a good cut and good service.

As always with this sort of request: Canberra’s a big place – where?

The guy at the Curtin shops is excellent. not the joint on the corner opposite the take-away, the one a couple of doors down from that. Cheap as… plus… you get a wowwy pop.

My son likes the men’s hairdressers at the rear of Roger David in the Hyperdome, and he is really really ‘thing’ about his hair (far more than my girls!).

Go to Hair Nitesh. Nitesh and his dad Suren are awesome craftsmen when it comes to mens hair, no matter what type! They’re a family business that stretches back 100years from their homeland of Fiji. They’re in 1 Josephson St, Belconnen. And open till 7.30 weeknights so great for those who work. Very friendly service! You will not be disappointed!

Dom at the Erindale Hair Centre is fantastic.
