Canberra - home to convict gardeners

Stateline has an interesting piece about the tree plantings along Canberra Avenue back in 1926.

Back in those days, some of the early Canberra residents stole the newly planted trees for their own gardens in the new desolate Canberra suburbia. It seems that in 83 years things in Canberra still haven’t changed.

Maybe it’s something to do with our convict roots, but not a sunny weekend goes by when I don’t see someone helping themselves to woodchips on the roadside, or hear of plants being souvenired from gardens.

I even know of one cunning Canberra local who snared a cutting from a fuchsia during an open day at the Lodge!

You don’t have to steal woodchips. You just bribe the friendly council workers with a case of beer and they will deliver them.

I’ve filled my horse riding arena with wood chips from the government. Heh heh heh!

I can see no problem with taking cuttings from established plants, so long as it does the plant no harm. It is normally good form to ask the owner first though. In the case of public plants, I see no real issues unless there is a notification about not removing plant materials from the site.

On the other hand, the total removal of plants is theft, pure and simple.

My friend’s MIL had her newly planted roses stolen from her garden in Isabella Plains.

wouldn’t say propogation is a sign of a bogan, more of a competant gardener. I do it all the time!

We’ve had a few plants knocked off from our inner north garden. 🙁

I even know of one cunning Canberra local who snared a cutting from a fuchsia during an open day at the Lodge!

From the “You know you’re a bogan when…” files.
