Did anyone see the Perseids over Canberra?

warall 13 August 2009 9

So who got up at 6am to watch the meteor shower this morning (13/08)?

Looking for any descriptions…

[Warall’s thoughts were: nah. Kids will be up in 15′ let me sleep]

What’s Your opinion?

Unfortunatly most star watching web sites and software show that the shower is below the northern horizon for anyone south of Brisbane.

Unfortunately most announcements regarding such phenomena seem to coincide with . . . cloud. Argh!

Ditto, I looked at a site which I think was linked from NASA. It said that we would see zilch. I think Alice Springs and NW WA were the best places to see it.

Won’t see anything in Canberra. It’s a Northern Hemisphere thing.

Just as well, as we would all go blind, then the triffids start growing then………………

The perseids are not a southern Australian shower, like the Quadrantids(Sucks for us).

Be on the lookout on october the 21 for the Orionids. Should be able to see over 10 an hour on a decent night.

Any more info on the Orionids? I googled but nothing specific apart from looking NE to E.
If I could be pointed in the right direction for more info, especially best times to look I’d be grateful.

I dont know much, but look from 3~am onwards. They are best seen in the early morning. If none seen around 3am, try 4am+ if your willing to stay awake, under sleep temptaion. Face North or East and look up 90 Degris (best chance of seeing any when the altitude of Orion is high). With no moon in the sky(I hope so), you may be able to see 15 an hour if your lucky.

Remember, there is a chance with moon and cloud haze, only few will be seen. Hope you take this in and look out for them!

You won’t have to worry about the moon on 21 October as it’ll be a new moon on the 18th.
