ACT Policing has caught a 23-year-old man travelling 149km/h in an 80km zone along Parkes Way early this morning (Monday, January 16).

Around 6am police recorded the man travelling 69km/h over the speed limit. He was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice and fined $1,811 and lost six demerit points off his licence.

In another incident, on Sunday (January 15) around 12.50am, police attended Ellerston Avenue in Isabella Plains after receiving information from the public that a man driving a silver Mercedes had failed to stop after colliding with a parked vehicle.

Shortly after their arrival, a member of the public contacted police to report a man driving a silver Mercedes erratically on Johnson Drive, with damage to the front end of his vehicle.

Police attended Johnson Drive and conducted a traffic stop. The man refused to undergo a roadside screening test and was taken to the Watch House.

He was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice and will be summonsed to court at a later date.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday (January 14) police conducted a random breath test on a motorbike rider on Hardwick Crescent, Holt.

The 19-year-old Kaleen man is a probationary licence holder, subject to 0.00 alcohol limit, and gave a positive reading for alcohol. He was found to have an alcohol content (AC) of 0.207. He was given Watch House bail and will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

I’m just impressed that there were actually ACT Police there to catch him. That enough of a shock in itself, I think I need a lie down …

Indeed. You should rest that brain cell.

I cant believe that people caught doing 50kph+ over the speed limit still get to keep their licence, surely we should be consistent with other states in immediately suspending these idiots’ licences.

Why should we? Why “surely”? Are you aware that SA, WA, NT & VIC don’t immediately suspend licenses for doing 45+ km/h over the limit? We ARE consistent with the other states. NSW and QLD are the ones who are inconsistent.

What’s astonished me is the dimwit 19 year old motorbike rider from Kaleen who was DUI at 0.207.

That’s 4 times over the normal limit, and a Brazilian times over the 0.00 limit for P-Platers. I’m guessing that he would’ve consumed…I dunno…10 to 12 standard units, or about 8 schooners of beer, in the hour before he got on his bike. Unbelievable stupidity. Given the consequences (ie death, maiming etc) of being unsteady on a bike, it’s pretty likely that the cops saved his life.

I wonder if he’s grateful.

I hope he thinks pretty hard about it. I’m not sure that you can expect too much rational thought of somebody that drunk. After a certain point, judgement is faulty and the beers keep on sliding down and intelligence and common sense fall by the wayside. The key point is sober realisation that it’s a dangerous situation to put yourself in. And others.

I myself have done about 180 km/h in a Golf on a public road similar to Parkes Way, albeit without the roundabouts every fifty metres or so.

Your medal is in the mail.

Geez, you’ll never make it as Governor-General. It’s like conducting a love affair by text, without the personal, hands-on touch.

My point, and I do have one, is that velocity in itself is not dangerous.

Haven’t we been 180km/h down this road before?

Time for a quick concrete barrier.

And perhaps a coffee.

NSW 45+ over doesnt necessarily mean loss of licence on the spot

Guns don’t kill people. Gun owners kill people.

Seen the difference between running into a concrete wall at 5kmph v. 50?

Ah, but it’s the concrete wall providing the danger there.

“Speeding motorists don’t kill people. Concrete walls kill people.”

Reminds me of a “caller” on a radio station that existed in the game Grand Theft Auto 3;

“Yeah, hi, I love the show, love hearing people’s opinions, that’s what made this country great. People. And opinions. And stuff. Most of all, guns. I’ve had it with people whining about guns kill people, guns don’t kill people, death kills people. Ask a doctor, it’s a medical fact. You can’t die from a bullet. You can die from a cardiac arrest or organ failure or a major hemorrhage, small piece of metal ain’t the problem. Besides, I only use my machinegun in the safety of my own home and car. I ain’t hurting nobody. And countries that don’t have guns ain’t American.”

“You know that’s a really good point. Countries that don’t have guns aren’t American. You know, if more people had guns, we’d have less shootings in this country……”

I saw the parked car and the mercedes that hit it on sunday morning. Did a good job. Lucky no one was killed. Ellerston Ave is a serious accident waiting to happen. If it isn’t dickheads speeding thinking it is bathurst, it’s people like this fool. I risk my life trying to get out of my street onto ellerston daily.

Much luckier than you think. A friend witnessed this, as he and some others were standing on the driveway and footpath opposite the car he collided with. Even luckier was that he someone managed to avoid driving through the front window of a neighbouring property after veering off the road into their garden, before driving off again and just missing another parked car. I’m told the guy was so intoxicated he couldn’t even walk unaided when arrested after engaging police in a 20km/h slow speed pursuit.

Apparently the egging brigade was also busy that night, to add to their ‘fun’.

Ah, but it’s the concrete wall providing the danger there. Put up concrete barriers across Northbourne Avenue, and you’ll have a lot of stunned motorists, going safely at the speed limit until the moment they hit the wall.

Which, of course, is the objective here.

I wish I could run at 50kph.

Boom-tish!

I actually saw the owners picking up said merecdes on my way back home in the afternoon. I’m hoping the fool wasn’t allowed to drive again!

If you speed, you’re an idiot?

What about if they are a copper responding to an urgent call?

For those who are curious (like me)… in the ACT:

45km/h over: 6 points

http://www.rego.act.gov.au/infringements/infringedemerit.htm

(The pedant in me would also like to note that the driver gained demerit points, he didn’t lose them.)

Very interesting. An example of the gap between policy formulation and implementation.

Interesting to note also, as mentioned by bd84, the difference with other states’ legislation. In NSW this bloke would have lost his licence on the spot.

I’m pretty sure NSW has moved to exceed speed by 0 – 10km/h over posted limit, 10 – 20 km/h etc. rather than the 0 – 15, 15 – 30, 30 – 45 we have.

In before skidbladnir.

When will ACT Policing teach itself how demerit points work?

I cant believe that people caught doing 50kph+ over the speed limit still get to keep their licence, surely we should be consistent with other states in immediately suspending these idiots’ licences.
