The ACT Government has created 150 new jobs in the territory’s public sector through its $20 million ‘Jobs for Canberrans’ fund. The fund will employ casuals and other people who have lost their job because of COVID-19.

It’s designed to catch employees who have fallen through the cracks in Federal Government programs and are not eligible for the Commonwealth’s JobKeeper fund, such as casual employees who were employed for less than a year in their role, as well as certain visa classes.

The new jobs include customer service roles at Access Canberra, city cleaning, garden and tree maintenance, environmental recovery in Namadgi and other administrative support roles.

Around 30 jobs in the first round are cleaning roles with Transport Canberra buses.

The workers have been employed on temporary, casual contracts for an initial period of six months.

“The ACT Government will work with businesses, employee representatives and community services organisations to target those people who are most in need,” a government spokesperson said.

“As part of the fund, directorates will also be seeking to upskill workers engaged using internal programs, partnering with the Canberra Institute of Technology.

“This will include a mix of both accredited and non-accredited training.”

Full-time roles in an expanding health sector are also available, with dozens of permanent and fixed-term positions open to applicants through Canberra Health Services and Calvary public health care.

Roles at the ACT Integrity Commission, Education Directorate, Justice and Community Safety Directorate, Transport Canberra and the Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate are also up for grabs.

Those seeking short term/casual employment are encouraged to check their eligibility for this fund and register their interest via the Casual Jobs Register.
