Gregan's woes do not bode well for Brumbies

After the Wallabies’ humiliating season (eight of nine tests lost), it looks like coach Eddie Jones is heading for the axe.

However Jones has also said he will dump captain and halfback Geoge Gregan from the squad if he doesn’t retire after Saturday night’s test against Wales (the link was written before the game).

After the match, Rugby Heaven said this was the end for Gregan.

“While Gregan still insists he will make a decision about his playing future after the Super 14 season next May, his time as a Test player following 118 internationals is now up.”

Keen rugby observers say if Gregan, as the Brumbies’ captain and halfback as well, is hounded into retirement by the Sydney media then the Brumbies have got big problems next year since they let their second stringer (Matt Henjak) go to Perth at the end of last season.

They ask if it would not better to hold off halfback selection for the Wallabies until after the 2006 super 14 season, and not hound out the current one because of some losses (even if he doesn’t remain captain)? Isn’t it going to be best to pick the form halfback?

The thing is that I don’t honestly think there is a better half in australia.

sure henjak and whittaker looked sharp coming on in the 65th minute. they were coming on fresh when everyone else was tired.

the wallabies backline woes are partly a lack of creativity in the centres but mostly a forward pack that isn’t up to the job at the top level.

More importantly I think we’ve been deceived by the notion of the total rugby player.

15 ball playing runners sounds great in practice, but at any given time only one player can actually be carrying the ball and he needs forwards who can scrum, ruck and maul, he needs a fly half who can kick the ball for miles, and lightning fast wings (not spare flankers). He also needs a hooker who can throw the ball in straight and locks who can catch it.

Until we get those I don’t know what the half back is supposed to be doing really.

i think gregan still has something to offer at provincial….. should have been gone from wallabies a while ago though… and yes i think that brumbies can do without a dick like henjak

yes because its the halfback thats letting the wallabies down, nothing at all to do with the front row that has been selected who couldn’t push back a pack of grandmothers

The Brumbies are safe for halfbacks. A bloke by the name of Luke Burgess can ply footy, and isnt a penis like Henjak
