ACT Policing has arrested a 20-year-old woman who allegedly robbed a hearing-impaired man at the Woden Bus Interchange yesterday (Sunday, September 16).

Police will allege that around 1.37pm the offender approached the 46-year-old Kambah man, who feared for his safety and handed over a sum of cash. The victim is both hearing impaired and mute, and communicates through sign language.

An anonymous witness saw the incident and contacted ACT Policing Operations, and an alert was issued on the alleged offender.

Police officers attending the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Monday, September 17) recognised the alleged offender. She was later arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House where she was charged under Section 32 of the Crimes Act, “make demand with threat to kill or inflict grievous bodily harm”.

Police will oppose bail.

Never nice to be mugged, but I really don’t see why it is relevant that the victim was hearing impaired? To insinuate that that would make the crime somehow more immoral seems rather patronising to me. It’s not as if the victim was mentally challenged or less physically able.

I really don’t know why the fact that he uses sign language needed to be added to the media release at all either.

He couldn’t call out for help, for example, being mute. I think it is certainly worse than if the alleged offender picked on an adult person without a disability. Do you think she would have chosen a man of that age without a disability? Note the degree of threat implied in the charge, too.

Well done to the person who reported the matter. We can’t all be Dogman and intervene, but they did the right thing in at least contacting police.

You and me can hear someone screaming at us. The chap involved probably had no idea why he was being yelled at or what was being yelled at him. He was obviously having to read other body language as a threat with no idea why.

It was on a Sunday … not quite as busy, but the anonymous caller did the right thing.

Also, identified at the magistrates court .. classssssy!

Unbelievably callous and so sad. I hope the victim is being assisted, as his money has undoubtedly gone.

She’s 30 years old in the article. Poor thing must have aged terribly.

Looks like the police have changed their story since the time of publication.

🙁 wow, what a terrible experience for the victim, i hope he is okay

On Sunday? I highly doubt it.
But job well done by police and the witness who reported it.

Becoming intently interested in their own lunch by the looks of it.

I am trying to recall if there has been anyone lower than this bottom feeder in a while..

So, the offender was recognised in the ACT Magistrates Court. Recidivism at its finest…

Wow, Canberra’s just getting classier and classier every day …… 😐 How awful for the poor victim. Hopefully this doesn’t cause him to loose courage and leave him fearful when getting out and about.
