2010 Canberra Marathon --- gone but not forgotten!

It looks like the bickering between an outsider and a local has caused the marathon to be cancelled this year. Here is the link to the Media Release http://www.chiefminister.act.gov.au/media.php?v=9182. Thoughts on this anyone? Given 2010 is a milestone in the marathon (its 2500th year) it is a shame that the toys have been thrown out of the sandpit.

490 BC plus 2010 AD totals upto 2500. Marathons didnt start in Australia, news at 11.

There was no year zero in our calendar, so the correct calculation would be: 490, plus 2010, minus 1 for the missing year makes it 2499.

The comment “bickering between an outsider and a local” is far from the truth. CSM may be located outside Canberra now – but Dave used to be an ACT resident for many years (and as a true resident, worked for the government…). He is also a life member of ACTCCC – hard to be if you never lived here.

But enough of me being pedantic – the marathon will be back in 2011.

the canberra marathon is great fun and its a shame to see it go, they used to start close to the baptist chirch at telopia park school. they also sold cheep asics runners which you don’t get too often. I just pray they bring it back next year.

2500th huh? the local indigenous population kick it off?

From wikipedia:

The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), which took place in August or September, 490 BC

490 BC plus 2010 AD totals upto 2500. Marathons didnt start in Australia, news at 11.

The Canberra marathon is older than Jesus? Whodathunkit.

Next they’ll be claiming it’s more popular than Jesus. Hold on, someone’s already said that . . .

The Canberra marathon is older than Jesus? Whodathunkit.

Marathons are for pussies. Try Ironman instead.
