ACT Policing has seized an amount of cannabis following a search warrant on a vehicle in Watson last week.

Around 3pm on Friday (August 3), members of ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations and the Specialist Response Group conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near the Antill Street and Federal Highway intersection in Watson.

Police executed a search warrant on the vehicle, and seized approximately two kilograms of compressed cannabis. The vehicle was also seized and taken to the Exhibit Management Centre.

Following the search warrant, the 27-year-old driver and his male passenger were taken to City Police Station.

Police are waiting on the results of forensic sampling before laying any charges.

It’s a crime there has been no tax paid on this recreational herb for the last forty years.

RE: civilians

Oh so the emergency department can deal with an influx of up to 10 police with gun shots, All possibly life threatening – in under 5 minutes while having other civilians who could need treatment first (Canberra is a big city, and assume there are other people needing treatment for emergency),

Again were there 2 fire pumps, an ambo for every 2 people, and 2 armored trucks present at the arrest – I suspect not, so please contact OHS and report.

Either you are mixing threads, off on a wide unknown tangent or mixing drugs…..hard to tell…..either way, the keyboard is obviously not your friend at the moment.

Was there firearms or not?

All that for some lousy pot. Legalise it and we suddenly have a lot more police resources.

I think it’s worth considering that unless the cops have extremely good intelligence, they’re not necessarily going to know in advance the exact quantities and types of drugs people may be holding, they’re not going to know the villains state of mind, and they won’t be certain about whether weapons may or may not be involved.

Far better to assume the worst and take all necessary precautions, rather than get brassed up by some dickhead dealer and die in the street. The wife of one of the cops involved made the same point very well in the original thread related to this matter, and I totally agree with her.

Having said all that, I fully agree that all the resources allocated to combating the use of marijuana is wasted. It should be legalised, taxed, and quality controlled like other drugs such as alcohol and tobacco.

In one action, it removes a criminal enterprise entirely and brings in a buttload of new taxable dollars and also creates a new legit industry and most importantly, frees up previous police resources being wasted.

I think you are doing the police a dis service though, surely they would have reasonably accurate intel to make a stop like they did?

The intel would have (that’s “have” folks, not “of”) come from either an undercover operation, a tipoff from a civilian, or most likely by far, a dob in by another crim,

If it was a crim, the info would’ve been provided to get revenge, or to eliminate a rival, or to negotiate a reduced sentence, or some other salutary reason, so a wise operator would only trust it so far.

And even if you have the most trustworthy source, the target of the operation is likely to be a dimwitted and erratic individual who may be under the influence of certain substances, and who may react unpredictably when under stress. Even if your golden intel says “Dave Dealer is an upright citizen who has never used a shooter in the past and he will stop and put his hands up at the first sign of trouble”, would *you* bet *your* life on that information?

I wouldn’t. I would use overwhelming force to ensure the safety of myself, my troops and any civilians who happened to be in the area. As far as possible I would keep civilians well clear before, during and after the gig. Any other approach would possibly risk the lives of the villain, the troops and the civilians, and no sensible commander would put his arse in that position.

Assuming you’re talking about personal use…

Back in the day when I used to smoke rollies a 50g pack of Drum would generally last me around a week. On the basis of similar regular use of about 6 joints per day, 2 keys of dope would be close to a years supply. That would be far enough for me.

Still, yeah, there are bad dudes out there who are far more deserving of attention than some sad shmoe with a bag of weed in the boot of his mobile wreck.

It’s a crime there has been no tax paid on this recreational herb for the last forty years.

As soon as the buzz from the sampling wears off, they’ll start the paperwork.

You have to admit, it would be hilarious (yet sad) if the test came back positive for nothing more than oregano…

Do you think common sense might be gathering a bit of momentum?

I, for one, am heartened to see so many people of one mind on the issue of the pointless, ineffective and wasteful laws prohibiting cannabis.

The cops must be so proud of their efforts, 2kilos of cannabis is such an accomplishment. Hold your heads up high and uppercut yourselves.

poor guy, a couple of pounds doesn’t go very far or generate much profit. what benefit is there from this operation?

I doubt they’ll get too harsh a punishment. Sucks that they’ll have to go through the court system for a totally non-violent crime though.

seized approximately two kilograms of compressed cannabis.

If they could have fit 78 more blokes in the same car they would have gotten away with civil penalty ($100 – possession for personal use).

Just sayin’.

What about all the guns we were hearing about?
