The Ellis Collective have put out a media release on the plans for their CD Launch at the Street Theatre:

Alive with anticipation and pregnant with expectation, The Ellis Collective, are proud to announce the delivery of their long awaited debut album after a protracted gestation. Titled ‘Means What It Means’ , the album will launch at The Street Theatre on March 26 with special guests Mikelangelo, Vorn Doolette and Tom Woodward.

This local six-piece Indie-Folk outfit introduced themselves to audiences at Australia’s iconic Woodford Music Festival and National Folk Festivals , before securing some kick-ass supports including with US folk punk legends Tom Gabel (Against Me!) and Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music) Stepping away from the spotlight during 2010 to focus solely on recording, they have carefully crafted a studio sound that remains faithful to their unflinching live performance, emerging from the sound booth a year later clutching ‘Means What It Means’ to their chest.

Retelling the jagged-edged disappointments of ordinary life against a backdrop of staccato string sections and multi-layered harmonies, The Ellis Collective practice an unconventional brand of storytelling, Featuring emphatic vocals that echo Gareth Liddiard and lyrics evoking John Darnielle, ‘Means What It Means’ is both a poetic recounting of human frailty and an exhilarating display of musicality.

Out through the Longhaul Records Label, ‘Means What It Means’ was lovingly recorded on old-school two-inch tape at Infidel Studios. The result is a captivating record of brutally honest Australian song-writing that is neither indie nor folk, but stretches these genres to create a sound that is undeniably unique and unmistakably Australian.

Supported by the ACT Government and Canberra Musicians Club, ‘Means What It Means’ will be launched at The Street Theatre on March 26 as part of their ‘Made In Canberra’ initiative. The Ellis Collective is using the
Canberra launch of ‘Means What It Means’ as an opportunity to recognise and thank Canberra’s arts community and audiences. In a parochial show of respect to their hometown, the album will be available exclusive to Canberra audiences for two months prior to its national release date. The evening is also a special one-off showcase of Canberra’s best local musical exports. Having graced stages at internationally recognised festivals including The Edinburgh Fringe and WOMAD, Mikelangelo, Vorn Doolette and Tom Woodward are once again returning to the warm familiarity of a welcoming Canberra audience. In one final gesture of thanks to Canberra, every pre- booked ticket purchase will receive a free copy of The Ellis Collective’s previously unreleased live album ‘The Ellis Collective: Live at Woodford’.

We understand from the event’s Facebook page that if you mention RiotACT while prebooking on 02 6247 1223 you’ll get a discount.
