4 million tonnes of greenhouse gases saved?

Simon Corbell is making known the successes of the ACT Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme:

The final report on the scheme, which required all electricity retailers to reduce or offset greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of electricity, will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly today.

“In the final six months of the scheme, the 16 retailers providing power in the ACT surrendered 383,902 eligible certificates, representing the equivalent of 383,902 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (t CO2-e),” Mr Corbell said.

“This equates to the annual emissions of around 100,000 cars given the average vehicle produces 3.8t CO2-e a year.

“During the seven-year lifetime of the scheme, the retailers saved the equivalent of 3,848,163 tonnes – which equates to the annual emission of around a million cars in a year.

And a glorious dawn awaits us:

“Our Sustainable Energy Policy and climate change action plan will result in the ACT’s electricity supply being 90% renewable by 2020 and the ACT being carbon neutral by 2060,” Mr Corbell said.

“The new Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme, which requires retailers to help improve energy efficiency in the ACT, started on 1 January.”

The ACT Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme closed on 1 July with the introduction of a national price on carbon in the Commonwealth’s Clean Energy Act 2012.

Shouldn’t “saved” be “averted”?
If the emissions have been saved, where are they being stored.

I wish Corbell would do something about real emissions, namely the daily ones from the Mugga Lane tip that drift over eastern Tuggeranong.

I might just believe this, provided they are talking about supply within the ACT borders, given how little electricity is actually generated here (compared with how much we use, which comes from the national grid).

I can’t believe Simon is still pushing this extreme environmental crap, especially the pledge to bring in 90% renewable energy. But I suppose when you sell your souls to the Green Beelzebubs so you can cling to power despite the majority voting against you, every skerrick of commonsense and rationality flies out the window.

I don’t think it was just Zed, the Nimby Mob from the surrounding suburbs also had a fair bit to do with it.
I remember the residents of Macarthur were fired right up.

4 million tonnes of greenhouse gases saved? Where have they saved it, is there a really big balloon of it somewhere?

We almost had a gas-fired power station in the ACT, but Zed and his backward-looking (and apparently anti-business) policies scotched that.

It now seems likely that this country, despite being over-abundantly blessed with coal, will never again build a new coal-fired power plant….

Weren’t you pushing man-made climate change in another thread? I’m getting confused….

.. and how ?

So who weighed it ?

Things are moving on, and we’ll be forever faced with the menace of an ALP in government until the Liberals start looking forward instead of dragging their feet.

Just frees me up to load up on the sauerkraut 🙂
