40kmh speed limits coming to Athllon Drive near mawson?

Travelling along Athllon Drive over the past few days, I’ve noticed new road signs have been installed before and after the intersection near Mawson shops. The signs remain covered over but due to the shoddy covering material it looks like a 40km/h speed limit is going to be introduced in that area before and after school hours.

A quick google indicates TAMS previously rejected consideration of lowering the speed limit in this area, but as an overpass was too expensive and teacher supervision of students were considered impractical, the reduced limit it is. Has anyone in the area been notified of this change? Given that this a (if not the) major route for Woden-Tuggeranong traffic, including suburban and intertown buses, this is likely to have a major impact on traffic flows…

an overpass???

There is a set of traffic lights and an underpass within 250 metres of each other. Despite both of these, the number of Melrose kids that play chicken along that way is frightening.

Each morning they run every which way (often against the lights and even diagonally) at the Mawson shops corner. I’m surprised more of them aren’t splattered.

A poor innocent driver may end up stuffed for life if he takes one out.

Kids won’t use an underpass or crossing unless it is directly in front of the route they want to walk. As a Melrose old boy I can speak from first hand experience. An underpass was built under Melrose Drive (now Marr St) between Melrose and Marist when the schools were first opened in 1970. We used to just run across the road between cars. Much lobbying by the then principal saw a crossing put in in 1974 and most of us began using it. In those days there was no Athllon Drive, which was just a dotted line on the maps labelled “Yarra Glen”.

+1. Lazy solution for impatient/stupid students.

60, coincidentally where a kid got hit a couple of weeks ago. Silly kids along there don’t know how to cross. Maybe teach them because they won’t always have a slog slow zone to protect them, and frankly this 60 zone won’t do much anyway, sounds like something to show for the lawyers.

It’s for a 60km/h zone between 3.00pm and 3.30pm on school days, according to yesterday’s Cannerra Times.

Yep, there’s big temporary orange signs on Athlon saying the above.
