47-year-old man allegedly caught drug driving twice in two hours

Police have slammed the actions of a 47-year-old man who was allegedly caught drug driving twice in two hours on Monday (3 September).

Around 10:30 am, the man was stopped on London Circuit in the City where a roadside drug test returned a positive result for cannabis and methylamphetamine. He was taken into custody and conveyed to City Police Station for further tests.

The man was released an hour later and ordered not to drive for at least 12 hours.

Around 12:15 pm, police stopped the same man in the same vehicle on Cooyong Street, Braddon. A second roadside drug test again returned a positive result for cannabis and methylamphetamine.

The man was again taken into custody and conveyed to City Police Station for further tests before later being charged and bailed to attend the ACT Magistrates Court. He has been charged with five traffic offences including two counts of drug driving.

The officer in charge of traffic operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said the man’s actions demonstrate a distinct lack of regard towards the safety of road users in the ACT.

“This driver’s actions are senseless,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.

“He has endangered other road users by driving with not one but two illicit drugs present in his system. After being served a direction not to drive a vehicle for twelve hours by police, this man was detected less than an hour later driving a vehicle.

“It is well known that impaired driving can significantly contribute to serious collisions and deaths on our roads.”
