cold ride

So that was a good hard frost this morning and still not over zero.

The Kelpie of Few Accomplishments and I thoroughly enjoyed the frosty walk to The Eagle’s Nest this morning (left the bike at work last night for reasons best not gone into).

Did you get of shot of the frost this morning? Send it in to images@the-riotact.com .

UPDATE 20/06/12 09:23: Actually if we go from the Bureau it was -6.3.

That street looks very familiar. Inner city hedges, roads with recent storm water pipe construction, parks at the end of the street. What are you doing wandering around Anslie early in the morning?
I probably did some of the paperwork authorising that construction. You know we do it just so people can jack hammer you inner urbanites awake first thing on a Sunday morning.

Thank you Thumper.

That precise conundrum cost the Dept of Transport (many years ago) a hell of a lot of money in an advertising campaign. Many thousands of A1 posters were printed before it was pointed out that ‘lose’ and ‘loose’ meant diferent things.

Lose….

Unless you’ve lost loose bearings.

I suspect that even the masochists out there would squirm at the thought of mounting that one although it would give a whole new meaning to frostbite!

Where’s Troy Buswell when you need him?

Although he would get a rather icy reception he’s the man for the job!

Another variation on the thermal clothing – “Silkbody” silk thermals. Not only are they amazingly effective, but the fact that they breathe well means I can wear them to bushwalk with in the summer. Just need an airing after use, and the occasional handwash in lukewarm water.

The catches are that I’ve only ever seen them on sale in one place in Australia; Platypus Outdoors in Melbourne, and they are not cheap, at around $110 a piece for tops and pants.

I find them light and very comfortable, though, and far less itchy than either wool blends or polypropolene.

Comic and gamer nerd – buy yourself some Ice breaker socks. THE best $50 you will EVER spend. trust me.

Where from? camping stores? Never heard of them but this interests me greatly.

The upmarket/serious outdoor shops are the go, pretty big thermal-wear brand. You might want to check the insulation in your shoes too… sticking another insole inside might help get you away from what’s conducting the cold in.

I have bad feet and have to wear prescription inserts so no room for anything else, sadly. i will check out these socks though.

KB1971, i would love to leave, but my wife says no plus i have a good job here. i just have to suffer immensly for 3 monthes of the year!

Ah, you need to learn to embrace the beauty of chilly mornings and make it bearable 🙂

Born and raised here, thumpster. If it hasnt happened by now, i dont think it ever will.

Touche 🙂

.

Paddy Pallins etc sell them.

Buy the Hike/Crew socks in the brown and green carboard.

Plus if your feet (and probably body) is cold, shout yourself a merino thermal too.

There are various different layers from under layers (like long sleeve longjohns) to mid layers.

At -5 with a merino and a jacket and icebreaker socks i’m toasty in the mornings.

Merino clothes are expensive, but once you have them you will not go back.

polypro thermal gear tends to get a bit whoofy on the nose after a while, even with regular washing.

will look inti t, THANKS!

Some Canberrans take it a little too personally when people say they hate something about Canberra.
I too hate Canberra winters but doesn’t mean I hate everything about Canberra. I also just have to suck it up for three months. I’m assuming Comic Nerd meant that the cold weather is the thing about Canberra he hates most but it wasn’t worded the best (although I may be wrong).

Point is you don’t have to love everything about this place to live here.

lol i hate A LOT about canberra, but there are certainly worse places i could be living. ive come to terms with the fact im never leaving so no point complaining.

If your feet and hands get unusually cold, you might have Reynaud’s (doctor can check).

There’s a range of battery-operated heaters they sell for ski boots now, just some thin little wires which would be easy to put in your shoes, but finding a spot for the battery might be a trick. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve developed something suitable for shoes though.

make sure your shoes are warm when you put them on in the morning too. Makes a huge difference.

Oh suck it up.

Try a European winter. -6 is nothing. We don’t even get a regular snowfall here.

I love Canberra winters.

Only real cities have extreme temperature changes, unlike Brisbane and Sydney 🙂

So whose delightfully toasty bike seat is that then, hm?

It was a target of opportunity out on the street.
