For our future leaders: The ACT Government today opened a $5.9 million Centre for Innovation and Learning at Caroline Chisholm School in Tuggeranong.

The ACT Government opened a $5.9 million Centre for Innovation and Learning at Caroline Chisholm School in Tuggeranong last Friday (11 May).

The $5.9 million learning centre provides students and teachers at Tuggeranong public schools and the wider ACT public schools network, with access to high-quality facilities where they can develop skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

“Some estimates suggest that about 75 per cent of the fastest growing occupations require skills in these disciplines. As students develop these skills, they also grow their capability to work collaboratively, think creatively and critically, analyse and solve problems, and use digital technology,” ACT Minister for Education, Yvette Berry, said.

The Centre provides flexible areas for individual and small group work, as well as large showcase events. It has multi-use science laboratory facilities for chemical, biological and physical science activities, technology, robotics and 3D printing laboratory facilities, areas for design and construction, electronic displays and writable surfaces, and wireless internet connectivity for online learning and coding.

The building is also flexible enough to be used for other curriculum activities and provides a professional development venue for teachers and teacher professional associations.

“While the facilities are impressive, I’m more excited about how the ACT’s amazing teachers will use the Centre to facilitate great learning for inquiring, innovative students. Through the Future of Education conversation, students and business have told me about how important it is that students are learning for the future,” Minister Berry said.

The ACT Government is yet to deliver the Academy for Coding and Cyber Skills as promised in the 2016 election.

Do you think the ACT Government should be spending more money on innovation or teaching kids the staples of reading, writing and arithmetic?

I hope it lives up to the ACT Government hype. The much trumpeted Tuggeranong CIT turned out to be just one and a half floors of an old public service building with no traditional classrooms.

The new Tuggeranong CIT only offers a handful of classes and most students have to top up their training at Bruce or Reid.

Tuggeranong Education as implementated by Andrew Barr continues to be window dressing only.

Big promises like the Namadgi Superschool and better targeting of Tuggeranong’s limited school funding have all led to decreasing performance on NAPLAN and PISA benchmarking.
