5 worst and best things about Canberra according to two teenage girls

I do love a good YouTube video about Canberra, and today I found two from user Eloey Skitz. Who seems to be two girls, maybe one is Elory and one is Skitz? I don’t know. It’s not important.

Firstly the girls list the top 5 things they hate about Canberra:

There is the prerequisite “Canberra has nothing to do” comment (which to be fair is a much more legit problem when you’re under 18) and concerns about how nobody cool comes from Canberra. Honestly it makes me feel somewhat nostalgic for being a bored teen in an odd way. No celebrities, no One Direction concerts, it can be hard being a tween.

Also apparently Canberra is cold because there isn’t a beach here.

Perhaps feeling they were too hard on Canberra because they followed up with their 5 favourite things about Canberra:

I know, it took me a moment to get over the fact that I was listening to teenagers talk positively about something.

Sadly however, the list of ‘pros’ manages to make Canberra sound way worse than the list of ‘cons’ does.

We have landmarks? The weather here is alright sometimes? These are the best things you can say about living here?

Also, we have 3 big shopping centres? That’s not even correct! But again to be fair, I too often forget Tuggeranong exists.

Canberra Critics.

The “big name music acts never come to Canberra” thing is only partially true. This year is particularly devoid of big concerts for some reason (centenary?). For such a small city we’ve had some really big names come to play – in the last 4-5 years;
Rob Thomas
Massive Attack
Lady Gaga
Pink
Linkin Park
Good Charlotte
James Blunt
Incubus
Matchbox20
Hot Chelle Ray
The Presets

I can also recall;
Elvis Costello
Deep Purple
Def Leppard
Elton John
Don McLean
Live
Silverchair
Tool
Brian Adams (creep…)
Ben Folds Five

+ G3 (Satriani, Vai, Lukather) and a full show on the current Vai tour. Both amazing concerts.

Brian Jonestown Massacre, just last year at the ANU.

now you’re talking – the original list didn’t have big names – none of them over thirteen letters. bjm has twenty two! but john mayall’s bluesbreakers has even more!

And don’t forget this headline act:

http://aso.gov.au/titles/newsreels/official-opening-canberra/clip1/

but even then, the young folk were complaining about there not being enough attractive and interesting sheep to hang out with.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana were long long ago.

And if not for family in Canberra I doubt Pearl Jam would have come.

If we’re going back that far we can add Dire Straits.

Don’t forget Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Flea lived here for a while.

When did RHCP play in Canberra? Flea’s family ties to Canberra does not a concert make.

Also, don’t forget the Trackside festivals that have bought us lots of awesome acts.

Indeed, as has Groovin the Moo and Stonefest. Pendulum headlined Stonefest a few years ago.

But while we’re dusting off the classics, hows about;
Phil Collins
Tina Turner
John Farnham
Michael Bolton
Alice Cooper
AC/DC
Harlem Globetrotters!

That’s the playlist in hell.

(With the possible exception of AC/DC)

George Benson
Nana Mouskouri…

I was sticking to the really big acts, and trying to stay somewhat relevant for people under, say, 40!

Kelly Clarkson somehow slipped my recollection… don’t know why that is!

Adding to the list of big name acts, Mumford and Sons last year.

However people seem to want things on a platter. Make your own fun, we did that when we were young.

I think making your own YouTube channel and producing videos certainly counts as making your own fun.

I remember that gig!! Bruce Stadium in 1990 or 91 and supported by Hothouse Flowers.

It bucketed ice cold rain all day, and I can remember the scantily clad young women all turning blue and being carted off by the ambos. Me and my partner and our friends were wearing Akubras, Drizabones and Wellingtons, and we still got wet.

Still, the music from both acts was fantastic…what a memory of a distant and happier time.

Late 1990, I saw Aerosmith at the AIS arena on the October LWE in 1990 and a mate of mine came up and saw Dire Straits about a month later. This is before I moved here.

1998 – Van Halen!

Such a list is not complete without the legendary Pearl Jam and Nirvana concerts.

I’ve had a few, but you appear to have missed Cyndi Lauper and Michael franti in this list.
Also, the Tweens must have caught wind of their video’s sudden popularity as it’s been removed.

X someone who spent her teenage year in braces and pigtails …

There are no boring places. Only boring people.

Looks like Canberra has a shortage of dentists too!

1. You mean orthodontist

2. What the f does that have to do with anything, or do you have some thing about belittling young women?

Wanker.

Anyway I would comment on the videos except they’ve been deleted.

Because she has braces?

Wouldn’t that count as evidence of available dentists?

Get out of here with your logic.
