$50 for GWS

An ongoing problem for AFL in Canberra is that while there are many fans of the game, they all support different teams.

In the above video Kevin Sheedy is letting you lot know that if you want a stake in the new Western Sydney AFL side “GWS” you need to hand over a pineapple.

Their website has the current pledges at 1,079, so still a ways to go for the needed 5,000.

ACT4GWS pledge up to 3373 / 5000 required.

As an AFL fan I have reluctantly supported this: concerned that the AFL are just going to do over the local comp whilst developing Syd comp and have ACTAFL teams play in a Sydney comp, and that tthat will undermine local afl rather than develop it, I think that the arrogant AFL should support heartland – ie Tassie, NT and even ACT, before throwing money at conversion of NSW, which has take decades to notice the swannies.

BUT I have pledged anyway-
if it doesnt make it to achieve the pledge 5000 target – the money is refunded, if it does, there is an option to roll it into a membership package. Which Id likely do, as its a bit of a novelty to goto games at Manuka, always enjoy it, lovely little stadia, intimate venue a rare priveledge in watching elite AFL, (love abusing the crap outa opposition – a bit pointless from the 3rd tier at the MCG!) and assume membership = gate savings so probably worth the $$ if I get to all the Manuka games. Even if I dont join GWS, still happy to pledge / pay to secure ACT Games, will be great for Canberra.

I’ll post this on the ACT4GWS site as well, but I’d like answers to the following:
Of the 40 games over 10 years (ie. 4 per year) promised how many of these :
a.) will be in-season, home & away games?
b.) will feature foundation and popular opponents (eg. Collingwood; Carlton; Essendon; Hawthorn & Geelong)?

How much money is being promised by the ACT Government if this $250k promotion is succesful;

What infrastructure or assistance with infrasructure is the ACT Government promising?

a) None of these questions have been answered by GWS, and with the rumoured demise of the NAB Cup from 2012, I would say you could have 3 Home and Away games and a practise match each season.
b) Geelong maybe, the others no chance. Too much money to be made playing these games at the Olympic Stadium, not just the showground.
c) I’d assume that is commercial in confidence
d) A ten year AFL Commitment would see a decent investment at Manuka to at least improve the corporate facilities and add a couple more thousand seats.

I’ve handed my cash over with some blind faith – I’d prefer a quality (albeit not premium) product over no product at all.

Latest 2009 Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey (ERASS) for ACT shows 1. Rugby Union 2.AFL 3. Rugby League.

Waaaaaaiiiiiit a minute. I couldn’t let this one go unanswered. It doesn’t say that at all. The number one organised sport (I excluded aerobics since it’s neither a sport nor a game) in the ACT is Football, which has more participants than all these other three codes put together. So let’s remember what’s really the only game in town. (Let the wogball bashing begin…)
I am impressed that it only took one post for this to descend into the war of the codes![/quote

Battlecat the comment was based on the previous comparison by XO VSOP which compared AFL Rugby League and Rugby Union. Yes you are right about aerobics and football being more popular but that wasn’t the point!!

If Brisbane couldn’t support a second rugby league team in the ’90s with league being the top sport in Qld, then I hardly think Sydney would be able to support a second AFL team with AFL being a second string sport in Sin City. The Keneally state government might be throwing pots of money at them at the moment but when the Libs take over in March and start the necessary program of belt tightening and financial stringency don’t expect the show to be on the road for very long at all.

I have no interest in supporting Demetriou’s penis competition with Gallop et al.

GWS is a concept that will need decades of subsidy. That is money that could go to established teams, or money that could go to whatever the AFL are presently using their allotment of stolen funds (read taxpayers money) on.

I’m happy to go down to Geelong/Melbourne to see my AFL and to watch the local leagues for district.

I only converted to Aussie Rules after moving to Canberra from QLD. I’ve always found most Canberrans are open to all codes (less state-based parochialism I’m guessing)

They all call themselves fans, but only if it is their team playing.
Are you an AFL fan or a (insert team name here) fan?
An AFL fan would go to a game for the love of the game, not just because the Swans happen to be playing their team.

Read it again pptvb – I said Bingo to the fact I’m sick of seeing Bulldogs Syd – I didn’t say I wouldn’t go to a game in Manuka till it was the Hawks playing. I’ve been to Manuka for a Dogs v Swans match, and for the record, I couldn’t get a seat.

And quit the whinge about free to air coverage – as a sports fan, you know what matters is seeing the team LIVE, so sit in front of the idiot box tonight at 8 and tell me which code you see beamed out at you.

Get a real name and I might consider joining. “GWS” is the biggest wank of a name I have ever heard for a sporting team!

You may be right, however I have a feeling there is more registered AFL players than league by far in this town, and it might even out number union. As I went to a union school myself I remember more players playing. Players = fans, I am sure they will get 5000

Latest 2009 Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey (ERASS) for ACT shows 1. Rugby Union 2.AFL 3. Rugby League. There has also been some criticism from other sports over AFL using Auskick in their numbers. Rugby Union and League don’t use skills sessions in their counts.

Anyway I though Sheedy was going to smash the rugby league heartland of western Sydney!!

Bingo!

Am considering supporting the GWS 4 ACT pledge, even though I am a Hawks fan, because then we might at least see some variety.

That has to be a deliberate Troll, ’cause no knuckle dragging rugby fan could possibly be that dumb, surely…

Fool.

An AFL fan would go to a game for the love of the game, not just because the Swans happen to be playing their team.
If more “AFL Fans” turned up at Manuka Oval, maybe the Victorians would pay more attention.
AFL fans are spoilt as they can sit in the comfort of their loungerooms & watch their teams on free-to-air TV, while Raiders & Brumbies fans generally have to fork out for Foxtel. We appreciate seeing our team live & love paying $26 for a pie!
I am a sports fan….Hawthorn Hawks, Sydney Roosters, Brumbies, Sydney FC etc and I watch most other teams when possible (yes, even Manly & Collingwood.)

We will never have the atmosphere of the “G” in Canberra ( I’ve seen AFL & Rugby there)
But I’m sick of hearing:
“We have no top quality AFL in Canberra!”
“The Swans are playing Roos next Sunday”
“oh, I don’t like them, I want Collingwood v Carlton”

Although I will stick to my Hawks, this GWS 4 ACT drive is as close as we are going to get to our own team for quite a while. Get on the bandwagon, build home crowd numbers, watch what happens.
That’s how we finally got a Wallaby game in Canberra.

You truly are a tool.

I am also a Hawks fan but would still happily support GWS.

Why do we have teams thrust upon us. People who support AFL in this town already have clubs they follow with passion and verve. Its like the failed Nth Melbourne experiement all over again. I can’t wait til GWS fails and Demtetriou has proverbial eff all over his face.

As opposed to all the full seats at a raiders game??
