ACT Policing caught 53 drivers during March for not wearing a seatbelt after a targeted operation involving Traffic Operations and General Duties patrols.

Traffic Operations, Superintendent Kylie Flower said that seatbelts saved lives, and that drivers also carried the full responsibility for their passengers wearing seatbelts.

“Seatbelts are a proven safety feature and there’s no excuse for not wearing one. You greatly reduce the chances of being killed or seriously injured in a collision if you’re wearing a seat belt and that belt is properly adjusted,” Superintendent Flower said.

“It is an offence to drive while not wearing your seatbelt or to permit passengers of any age to travel in your car without seatbelts.”

“It’s also crucial to ensure all children travelling in the vehicle are correctly restrained in a suitable approved child restraint which is properly fastened and adjusted, or occupy a seating position fitted with a suitable seatbelt and wear the seatbelt properly adjusted and fastened, even for short trips.”

ACT Policing statistics show that 709 individuals were given a traffic infringement notice (TIN) for driving without a seatbelt in 2012 (up 147 on 2011).

So far in 2013 there has been 111 TINs issued for individuals driving without a seatbelt in the ACT.

The fine for not having a seatbelt properly fastened is $303 + 3 demerit points.

…The car in front of my partner slowed down for a kangaroo so he did and the car behind him. She didn’t. This was College street so 8:15pm last week.

Being College St, she was probably tailgating because she was enraged that the car in front was going 60km/h in the 60km/h zone.

One must not interfere with natural selection.

They’re doing us a favour since they stand a more than even chance of removing themselves from the gene pool.

I have no problem with people not wearing seat belts.

David Attenborough would understand.

Yeah, compulsory seatbelts prevent the proper action of natural selection and leads us towards eventual Idiocracy.

Part of me…no…make that all of me thinks that providing all possible opportunities for people to self-select out of the gene pool would be a really good idea in the long term.

I would really love to see some sort of breakdown of the charges. I suspect that a reasonable proportion of the TINs were for kids in the back who had undone there seat belts, or who, while restrain, we not restrained correctly. Also, I imagine some of the people were probably “extras” in a car. All of these things are silly, and deserve the fine. But I want to know what percentage of the fines are issues to adult drivers with a functional seat belt available – but simply decide they would rather not wear it?

Clear majority for driver. Not surprisingly it is much easier to see a front seat driver without a seatbelt whilst on patrol. Furthermore, majority of cars on the road are driven one-up.

Tradies are particularly easy pickings: more likely than the average driver to be driving without a seatbelt, and the high-vis tops make things pretty straightforward.

What kind of moron doesn’t wear a seatbelt??

How many kinds are there?

I believe the space given is not sufficient to provide a full and comprehensive list…

my partner was in an accident last week. He was hit by a tailgating P plater who when she got out of her car was saying things like “luckily I was wearing my seatbelt – I don’t normally” OMG WTF (her car and the car between hers and my partners were written off.
But seat belts no excuses for anyone anymore. It’s been law for 30 years.

Your partner should have slapped her stupid for tailgating, slapped her for whatever crappy excuse she gave for tailgating and another for that ridiculous comment. Seriously though, did your partner ask why she was tailgating?

Personally I think it feels unusual to be in a moving car without a belt on. No so for a bus though… another argument altogether.

no idea she was bleeding and the person in the middle car had poor english so he was on the phone to 000 (oil on the road and stuff) and dealing with the situation. I’m sure the police asked a few questions of her though.

I think you’ll find the vast majority are for the driver not wearing their seatbelt.

One must not interfere with natural selection. Darwin is turning in his grave.

Man, I was looking forward to being pulled over for no belt (car doesn’t have them) but alas it didn’t happen, so I didn’t get to go through the satisfaction of proving an officer wrong 🙁

I wonder if any of these guys tried using the ‘driving without safety gear means your drive more carefully’ excuse that helmet-less cyclists like to use?
