A 61-year-old man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after he was hit by a light rail vehicle on the corner of Barry Drive and Northbourne Avenue on Monday morning (12 August).

Around 9.10am, the male pedestrian was struck by a northbound light rail vehicle at the intersection of Barry Drive and Northbourne Avenue, Turner.

ACT Policing members, along with ACT Ambulance Service paramedics, ACT Fire & Rescue members and Canberra Metro investigators attended the scene.

The patient was treated at the scene and transported to hospital in a serious condition.

ACT Policing’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team (CIRT) is examining the circumstances surrounding the collision. CCTV footage from the light rail vehicle has been provided to police, and a number of witnesses were spoken to at the scene.

Light rail services have been impacted.

Police would like to remind drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to take care around the light rail corridor. Don’t cross light rail tracks unless using a designated crossing, and take care just as you would when crossing a road.

The incident occurred on the day Canberra Metro and the ACT Government launched their Rail Safety Week campaign.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.

Look to the left, look to the right then look to the left again. If you see one big mother of a red tram coming STOP.

Glenn Williams Glenn Williams 9:35 pm 16 Aug 19

Hi, I thought it was look to the right, look to the left and then look back to the right. You need to check where the immediate danger is when stepping out on the road.

Toni Brooks Toni Brooks 4:04 pm 12 Aug 19

Some of the lessons I was taught as a child.

Look both ways before crossing a road. When at railroad tracks, look and listen before crossing if not marked by lights and bells. Do not stand at the edge of any crossing, road, lane, or building. Yes, this person could of had an accident which caused him to fall in the way of the lightrail. Theses things just don't appear out of no where though. Safety first. Stay off phones, use common sense, and the lessons I'm sure most of us, if not all of us, were taught as small children.

Light rail??? What a waste of public funds.

Stop hitting people Simon

If only there was some way for that pedestrian to see that big red shiny train, and be able to predict its likely path! Hopefully someone develops the technology soon to avoid these horrible man made monsters surprise attacking innocent members of the public. It reminds me of a lion stalking its helpless prey in the savanna. Oh how I hope Alistair Coe & Co come out to remind us all of the pitfalls of these insidious inventions. A bus would never do this!

Casey Barton Casey Barton 12:57 pm 12 Aug 19

Chris Cross or he could look UP from his phone when crossing the road 🤦‍♀️

Chris Cross Chris Cross 12:58 pm 12 Aug 19

Casey don't be ridiculous! You mean, be an active participant in his own safety and welfare? Surely you're joking?!?

Chris Bennett Chris Bennett 1:19 pm 12 Aug 19

I guess blatant sarcasm isn't so obvious to some people, Chris. 😂

At least if it were a bus, though, the next bus on the timetable could still run and go around the problem area

Chris Cross Chris Cross 1:55 pm 12 Aug 19

Chris Bennett We need lights and sirens on these beasts! And full fencing (electrified of course) along both sides of the track. And a clever slogan to protect the train line from being crossed illegally. "Stop The Flogs" or "Make Canberra Safe Again" sound good! An election IS coming after all ;).

Chris Bennett Chris Bennett 2:10 pm 12 Aug 19

    "Don't Fail with Light Rail"

Casey Barton Casey Barton 2:57 pm 12 Aug 19

Chris Bennett Chris is in my neighbourhood and I’m well aware of his sense of humour- the sarcasm did not go unnoticed. But thankyou for pointing it to anyone else who might be unsure.

Chris Cross Chris Cross 4:44 pm 12 Aug 19

Casey the🤦‍♀️ in your above message can be construed both ways. Face palm to the pedestrian for not looking where he's going, or face palm to me for sarcastically blaming the train 🤪. Like my sense of humour, correct interpretation in FB posts can be difficult to work out at times. Like Chris I was a little unsure on what you were saying.... but all good, thanks for clarifying 👍.

Casey Barton Casey Barton 6:41 pm 12 Aug 19

Chris Cross Bahaha my bad. Was definitely directed at the pedestrian in this instance.

Chris Bennett Chris Bennett 7:16 pm 12 Aug 19

My point was: 1) I find your sarcasm to be hilarious. And

    2) given that, it still would have been quicker to remedy if it were a bus involved the incident, because buses aren't bound by rails and they can go around a police investigation

Chris Cross Chris Cross 7:24 pm 12 Aug 19

Chris Bennett which still occurred in this instance if I’m not mistaken.

Can anyone advise if Acton buses are now being used for that section?

Leigh Brady Leigh Brady 1:00 pm 12 Aug 19

Yup - Bus replacement is in operation (according to the post)

And rail safety awareness started this week.... 🤦‍♀️ here folks... what not to do.... don't just jump out in front of the LRV which is bright red.... or any transportation actually......

Allan AJ Allan AJ 11:03 am 12 Aug 19

Is the light rail going again yet?

    Daniel R Burns Daniel R Burns 11:48 am 12 Aug 19

Allan AJ yes, just drove up Northbourne Ave and saw 3 LRV’s going past in both directions

Allan AJ Allan AJ 1:24 pm 12 Aug 19

Daniel R Burns thanks ended up driving didn’t want to risk it

Jeannine Lee Jeannine Lee 11:00 am 12 Aug 19

And are we surprised...? Not.

Brad Mann Brad Mann 10:33 am 12 Aug 19

The way I see it Canberra is Not design to have something like this. You just got put something in like this and Expect everyone to get Used to it straight away not going to happen

Daniel Duncan Daniel Duncan 10:39 am 12 Aug 19

Brad the old parts of CBR were to have trains (on roads like Northbourne Ave). New parts can barely take a bus.

Brad Mann Brad Mann 10:48 am 12 Aug 19

Daniel Duncan Personally I think otherwise. The ACT Government was not Probably prepared for it

    Stephen Page-Murray Stephen Page-Murray 10:56 am 12 Aug 19

    Brad Mann

By doing what exactly? It’s impossible to prepare for pedestrians who forgot to put their brain into gear before venturing out...

Rob Thomas Rob Thomas 10:58 am 12 Aug 19

Except Canberra was literally designed to have something like this

James Blake James Blake 11:43 am 12 Aug 19

Burley Griffin would disagree, Canberra was definitely designed for something like this

Jesse Mahoney Jesse Mahoney 11:50 am 12 Aug 19

Not designed for people to look left and right before crossing roads?

Jesse Mahoney Jesse Mahoney 11:57 am 12 Aug 19

You can't use them in hot weather? Okay...

James Blake James Blake 12:14 pm 12 Aug 19

You don't have to listen to us lol, but to ignore the Burley Griffin plan is to ignore the literal design blueprint of Canberra. Light rail was literally conceived from the beginning

Dylan Castles Dylan Castles 12:41 pm 12 Aug 19

Huh..others have stated facts, not arguments to your "opinion".

Daniel Königs Daniel Königs 12:43 pm 12 Aug 19

Yea Brad, you’re just incorrect on every level.

Barry Pope Barry Pope 12:54 pm 12 Aug 19

    James Blake lol

Leigh Brady Leigh Brady 1:04 pm 12 Aug 19

I agree Brad - the world wasn’t build for cars, busses, trains, or planes. That’s why we have these accidents.

Because we never had a car or bus hit a pedestrian in Canberra before 🙄

Lynelle Connelly Lynelle Connelly 2:44 pm 12 Aug 19

Surely people look for traffic before crossing the road. Trams are traffic.

Peter Manger Peter Manger 6:14 pm 12 Aug 19

Brad Mann yeah cause the concept of mechanically powered horse and carriage is totally new??

Gabrielle Hadkins Gabrielle Hadkins 2:08 pm 15 Aug 19

    James Blake exactly right 👏👏👏👏
