For those who haven’t caught up with the news, ABC Radio 666 Afternoon Show host David Kilby has announced he is retiring. This Friday is his last Afternoon Show, then he does a couple of weeks filling in for the breakfast show.

His musical taste wasn’t for everyone, indeed I sometimes wondered whether we’d gone back 50 years and were listening to the Dean Martin show on radio, but you couldn’t deny his encylopeadic knowledge of music from the 50s and 60s.

I’m not a long-time Canberran, so I can’t comment on how long he has been around Canberra radio and the ABC. Instead, in tribute let me say that over the course of a year his gentle charm, interesting guests and lengthy interviews have changed me from initially detesting him and the Afternoon Show, to listening to it every day. I hope we don’t lose him permanently and he is able to pop up now and then as a guest to share his musical knowledge.

Hey Jordie, are you out there? Still with JJJ? Sad to hear your Dad’s retiring. Have a Happy New Year and all that sort of stuff from Fluges, if you’re listening …

Whoever it is, just so long as it isn’t Andrea Close. A more vacuous bubble-headed clown you could not find.

ABC Canberra specifically tried to become more parochial and to get more ‘audience involvement’ as part of a big marketing push about 3 years ago. So someone must’ve decided that’s what the Canberra audience wants.

Yeah, it was mentioned on this mornings show that Jo is heading for Darwin.

Yeah, great musical knowledge and all. But frankly it’s about time ABC Canberra was run for the benefit of its audience and not just the amusement of those who work there. It is without a doubt the most self-satisfied, smug, parochial, and and uninspired ABC metro station in the country (and I’ve heard them all …) But then again, it’s Canberra and maybe that actually is how people really are here …

This could be an opening for SGS! Although, ABC is probably not his cup of tea.

Isn’t Jo going to Darwin?

So who will take over the spot? Jo Laverty?

Bring on Jo Lavery

not his son who appeared on the show every now and then: I meant David.

Great guy Dave. I was on his show once, so he must have been realy desperate, but he was really nice, so was the morning guy Ross. Didn’t like Dave’s music though, one little bit. Hope to listen again in the future with a more interesting line-up and better playlist.

There was little love lost between the two. And I hated Ian’s nostalgia bits. I was increasingly annoyed with them that I would change channels.

I still miss the morning show when it was David and Chris Uhlmann – they balanced each other out nicely.
