671 drivers caught speeding in July

It seems ACT Policing’s July campaign paid off.

ACT Policing caught more than 670 drivers speeding on Canberra roads during the month of July as part of its multi-agency road safety strategy.

Police issued a total of 502 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) for speeding and 169 cautions.

Two drivers were caught travelling more than 45km/h over the speed limit and both received fines of $1,811 plus the loss of six demerit points.

A 21-year-old provisional male driver from Dunlop was caught travelling at 130km/h in an 80km/h speed zone on Ginninderra Drive, while a 22-year-old male driver from Harrison was caught on Caswell Drive travelling at 141km/h in a 90km/h speed zone.

It was the second speeding offence this year for the Harrison man whose excuse for speeding was that he was ‘tired’.

Some 268 drivers were caught travelling more than 15km/h but less than 30km/h over the speed limit.

Officer-in-Charge of Traffic Operations Sergeant Mark Steel said drivers should have the message by now that speeding is dangerous.

“People who believe that it’s okay to travel at excessive speeds on our roads need to realise the danger that they are putting themselves and other road-users in by their behavior,” Sergeant Steel said.

“This type of irresponsible act will not be tolerated by the community or ACT Policing. Drivers need to remember speed affects their ability to stop their car to prevent collisions.”

“Drivers who willfully speed were gambling with their own lives, the lives of other drivers and passengers, and the lives of children, pedestrians and cyclists.

Sergeant Steel said he was also concerned by the 110 motorists that were caught speeding in school zones during the month of July.

“Speeding in school zones exposes some of the most vulnerable people in our community to the greatest risk; there is no excuse.”

“During the first week of term three, police conducted speed testing at 67 schools (49 per cent) throughout the ACT as part of our goal to visit every school this term.”

Fines for speeding range from a minimum of $203 and the loss of one demerit point to over $1,800 and the loss of six demerit points for each offence. The courts may also disqualify a driver from holding or obtaining a drivers licence in serious cases.

So clearly you’re ok then with the police and government applying the same heavy handed approach to those who break other laws, too? Like, say, laws prohibiting illicit substances?

Good to know.

Yeah, the potential for harm caused by marijuana usage and the potential for harm caused by speeding in a 1 tonne vehicle are exactly the same. Oh wait, not it isn’t! It’s not even in the same ball park, it’s just something childish you decided to throw in there because you feel entitled to drive as fast as you like.

Get over it, guy, and follow the speed limit like everyone else or hand in your license and learn how to ride a bike.

Although I don’t disagree, I think you’ll need to cite evidence if you’re going to make such a claim. By the same token, I know people who seem permanently brain damaged by excessive dope use, and other people who have never had an accident despite being serial speeders (albeit low range).

Lol no you dont

I know I certainly do. You’re lying.

lol No you do not.

lol yes I do.

See I can do it too.

If you have scientific proof if this then I’d suggest you get it published in a peer reviewed article and claim a Nobel peace prize.

Ha – you want scientific proof that I know a couple of people?

Just as I thought. You think the law only applies to you when it suits you – just like the people you’re having a go at.

Well done, Sherlock, have a cookie. Are you deliberately missing my point? Or are you just that stupid?

I didn’t miss your point. I did, however, weigh it against the fact that you’re a hypocrite and concluded it wasn’t worth paying much attention to.

If you’d care to look at the image of the pyramid of the hierarchy of disagreement, your response manages to be the 2nd from the bottom. Like I said before, well done.

When will they do a blitz on drivers running red lights? 3 times yesterday, I was at a set of lights, and just as my lights went green, a car coming from the side sped through the intersection, clearly going through a red?! I can’t believe how often I see it happening nowadays..

+1

amazing how many people have a holier than thou approach when it comes to road rules and the enforcement (or lack thereof) of them

bottom line is that the authorities have been trotting out the same lines for far too long, that they have become boring and the use of passive methods of enforcing road rules is clearly a waste of time. the P2P camera on Athllon Drive is an example of how poor the authorities are in making decisions on road safety.

time for the police to have a more visible presence on the road to enforce road rules, such as inappropriate use of fog lights, right lane hogs, red light runners and people who can’t be arsed to fix non-working headlights and/or brakelights.

I drove to Wagga and back last week and I saw more NSW police cars in the space of about 30 hours than I have seen in many a longtime in the ACT. Oh no, wait a second, I do see ACT police cars….they are parked at the City station when I cross the road to and from work. And all the portly looking constables are outside smoking. They can’t even police the 40 zone right outside of the station let alone the rest of Canberra.

Noticed a new point to point camera being set up on Athlon Drive right near the bottom near Drakeford Drive. There are two roundabouts between the first and second camera, so not sure what use it will be. If it was me, I’d put one on the Monaro and any other road where people feel entitled to speed.

I’ll put up my hand as being one of them; I got caught by a speed camera doing 89 in an 80 zone on the Barton Highway. I copped the $203 fine and, I assume, one demerit.

I knew what the limit was and I knew the camera was there – I just wasn’t paying attention. I suppose I deserved it. Stupidity is, as always, its own punishment.

Plus the $203, of course…

Personally I would like to see more focus on the school zones; it’s not uncommon to see a car reaching 80 km an hour in a 40 km zone at my daughter’s school. And 4WDs parked illegally, of course.

So…. you think 141km/h is quite acceptable for Caswell Dr (Gunghastly Driveway Extension) and the speed limit of 90km/h therefore should be revised? Interesting…

As for “how normal people (which I assume does NOT include people who think 140km/h is an appropriate speed limit for Grunge-ahlin Driveway Ext) can ask for them [speed limits] to be reviewed”, you could try writing to TAMS, or even your local City Councillor responsible for roads: Mr Shane Rattenbury. Good luck though – the only thing he knows is wrecking our roads with inverted potholes (aka. speed bumps) so as soon as you draw his attention to a particular road, he’s likely to have it changed so you’ll end up having to slow to 20km/h every 100m or so…

So how many people died or were seriously injured during July?

Maybe speeding doesn’t have the correlation with road trauma the authorities claim. Perhaps the speed limits need to be reviewed?

I wonder how many of the TINs were issued for speeding less than 10km/h over the limit?

We need a new approach.
