Ninemsn have this story here of plans by ANU to operate an elite schooling system for ACT public school kiddies in Science and Maths. They will gain access to ANU staff and resources. The Canberra Times has much of the same on their part of the web with Ian Chubb saying;

“We would like to blur the boundary between school and university, so we can encourage some of those young people to pursue science as a career, and in order to do so, to expose them, or at least the curriculum if not the individuals, to some of Australia’s best academic scientists”

Brilliant. Now all they need is City West to be built, so they can house the place.

Interesting you mention Civic West.

The Chief Minister’s media release, which he neglected to put online, specifically said the program was for year 11 and 12 students studying at their local school.

So the private sector is going to be specifically excluded.

Why would ANU choose to be part of a very clever attack on private schooling?

Hmm, lot of money to be made as part of the Civic West redevelopment.

Heh we had kiddies do first year maths while in years 11 and 12 at my school through newcastle… most of them wound up at differnt unis doing something not requiring first year maths.

or perhaps ‘recruit them at a young age and lock them into doing courses in their developing years as a way of realising future profit expectations’.

Perhaps they mean;

“We would like to expose naturally talented kids to a future they potentially cannot ever afford”

Forgive my cynicism. If it’s offering oppurtunities for kids to excel and expand the ACT’s skill base then I’m all for it.
