7.30 ACT on the ABC
Friday November 21st

  1. The Calverts and Mr Fluffy. The Calverts’ story parallels that of Canberra. They came here in the early 60s and built a home and garden that they thought would last a lifetime – then they discovered Mr Fluffy asbestos in the roof. Despite having it cleared years ago, they are on “the list” for demolition. In their 70s , they are devastated that they must lose it all and start again.
  2. AFP Commissioner – exclusive interview with the new AFP Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin – who talks about the new policing paradigm – he says sometimes action will have to be taken before all the evidence is in.
  3. Boy and Bees – young Mitchell Pearce is bringing back the bees – with hives on the rooftops of many Canberra city buildings.
  4. ST Art – Canberra’s laneways getting a paint job – from legitimate street artists.

Good to see new AFP Commissioner Colvin has a bell on his bike.

I for one will miss 7:30 ACT when it gets the chop. Suppose we can look forward to more repeats of QI instead.

Yes, it’s a glum prospect isn’t it – a once-over-lightly local news service of brief snippets (sorry guys, but that’s about all it is now) and no scope for anything deeper or more considered. The rest will likely just be the usual Sydney-centric ABC perspective. Given the peanuts involved in delivering the State and Territory 7.30 Reports, it’s hard to imagine that there aren’t other programs which will survive but which are somewhat less relevant to the core responsibilities of an Australia-wide public broadcaster.

Happy to be proven wrong, when the details are revealed!

The story I’ve heard is that The Friday Night Crack-up – run as an experiment a few weeks ago – will be the replacement. It was run to see public reaction and ratings were good so it will be made permanent.

[2] “new policing paradigm”? If he actually uses the word “paradigm”, then we can be confident he’s full of trite management buzzwords and there’ll be no change whatsoever.
There may be some leveraging of synergies towards empowerment, globalisation and diversity, but at the end of the day the status quo will be safe.
