I may, or may not, have been reading Cracked when I came across this ad.

Horseback riding in Canberra? A groupon deal?

How nice that they managed to localise the ad to get “in Canberra” in to it.

What a shame we don’t have anything like that beach anywhere near Canberra.

Isnt she riding a unicorn?

It took me a minute to realise that the ad in the original article was actually the picture the article was referencing. It was like my mind has been trained to ignore ads. But thanks to talk about the beach and the girls pants, I can see the fnords!

In the 1970s, when this photo was taken, to judge by the woman’s pants, there was indeed a beach in Canberra. After the Whitlam government’s flirtation with loan sharks it was thought that Canberrans should no longer have such easy access to a beach, and the Benjamin Offices were constructed over it. At night, the concrete magnifies the sounds of the hidden beach, like a huge concrete shell. Some believe that this strangled sea drives statisticians mad, but that may only be a rumour.

I never get sick of that story.
