No Nintendo games

Sine i’ve had some time off from my University study, I have been playing alot more of my Nintendo Wii. What I have noticed is the severe lack of places to rent Wii games around my area (greater Belconnen, North Canberra and Civic). I am puzzled because the Wii has been the no.1 selling console in Australia and around the world since launch in November 2006.
After doing some calling and in-person visiting, here are the results.

Civic Video: No Wii games in any store, but they do have Xbox360 and PS3 games. Woman on the phone didn’t even know what a ‘Wii’ was, and sounded as if I had said an obscenity.

Video 2000: No Wii games in any store. Went in person to store in Jamison Centre.
Woman said they didnt have any Wii games because it’s not as popular as PS3 and XBOX360.
After telling her that the Wii is infact the no.1 console (and has been for some time), she didn’t belive me.

Leading Edge (Belconnen): Around the time of Wii’s launch, this store had about 6 or so games. I went back a couple of days ago and the same 6 or so games were sitting there on the shelf. Meanwhile, new PS3 and 360 games were plentiful. Weird considering there are many, many more Wii games available than PS3 games.

Video Ezy: The store in belconnen is the only place to go.
They have plenty of Wii games, and regularly release higher profile games as soon as they are on sale in stores. Other Video ezy’s in did not have Wii games.

Blockbuster: Belconnen store had no Wii games, Dickson store had a grand total of 8 Wii games.

If you want more places to stock Wii games for rental, just visit the stores that have none and maybe if enough people keep asking for Wii games (or more Wii games) they might finally listen!

@Woody: Ofcourse the PS2 has an enourmous userbase, but I am clearly talking about the current next-gen consoles. Week by week anyway, the Wii and the DS have held no.1 and no.2 for over a year. Funnily, its only recently that the PS3 has overtaken the PS2 is sales. And yes, even though the Xbox360 had about a 9 month head start in Australia, the Wii overtook the overall sales of the 360 as of March (http://palgn.com.au/article.php?id=10647). And obviously, in worldwide terms the Wii has sold millions more than the much earlier released 360 (vgchartz.com). One analyst expects the Wii to outsell the 360 and PS3 COMBINED in 2008 (http://aussie-nintendo.com/?v=news&p=25133). With the Wii still undisputed in its market position, the 360 having horrible sales of late (http://aussie-nintendo.com/?v=news&p=25199), and the PS3 too far behind to catch up, the Wii will definitely ride this generation overall 1st.

@Snahons_scv6_berlina: I own quite a few Wii games, thanks. But there are a large number of smaller/party games that I’d like to rent over a weekend and play with friends. Paying $70 for ‘House of the Dead’, ‘Cooking Mama’ and ‘Ghost Squad’ isnt really justified. Thanks for your endearing and polite post.

@fnaa: Like I just said, there are a multitude of small party games that clearly dont warrant a purchase, I don’t have a modchip (which by the way are 100% legal in Australia).

WiiFit is just 2 sets of scales stuck together with a hefty price tag ($150). Wiggling hips, balancing on one foot and step ups are great but I’d rather be doing it in front of aerobics oz style. And in keeping with the discussion – I doubt it will be available for hire at any video store any time soon.

The best ways to keep fit in front of a game console have already been established: ddr, exuberant air guitar/karaoke, eyetoy, wii sports and my low-tech favourite, an exercise bike.

Wii is the poor man’s/girl’s PS3/360. A gimick machine nothing more …. lol

“WiiFit looks like a dud.”
Please explain…

Blockbuster Video at Lanyon Marketplace will be distributing Wii games for hire when they move to their new shopfront later this month.

WiiFit looks like a dud. Although less so than the stupidly priced mario kart wheel. What we really need is a wiimote + dance mat or eyetoy.

I can heartily vouch for the Wii – the console invented by a parent, to be sure.
And being fair, I get a serious workout from it as well.
But you do have to be careful not to strain shoulder joints.

But yes the games are expensive, and there are very few in the bargain boxes at shops.
Perhaps that is a hang-over from the global shortage of units over Xmas? Haven’t tried renting.

I can’t wait to see a version with additional remotes you strap to each leg – open up a whole new realm of games – martial arts, dance, more. The WiiFit due out this week will be a part way measure towards that.

anyone got any coughs for a PS3? 40 gig ?

But seriously, ever tried renting a PSP game in Canberra?

Wii games?

I thought that sort of thing was only available in Fyshwick or Mitchell 🙂

perhaps if you got off your lazy ass and spent your free time working, then perhaps you buy games instead of rent them.

Wii has been the no.1 selling console in Australia and around the world since launch in November 2006

Do we know total ownership stats for the various consoles, though? There may have been higher sales for the Wii since December 2006, but aren’t there still vastly more PS2s, Xboxes and 360s out there than Wiis, purely because these consoles have had a coupla years head start?

A quick bit of googling shows that at July 2007 the Wii had a (much) higher sale rate than the 360, for example, but there were still 6 million 360s in Aussie homes and only 3.5 million Wiis. The March 2008 figures show that Wii growth is astronomical, but the older consoles are still selling around a quarter of a million units a year, so the Wii is chasing a moving target. Even the PS2 sold 216K units, and God knows how many squillion of them are already out there.

Maybe things will be better on the rental market later in the year when the Wii catches up in terms of sales growth and absolute console numbers. Maybe not though – perhaps Wii owners on the whole are more likely to buy and less likely to rent. I’ll buy one in ten years when the games are $5 a pop (I just got a PS2 at Christmas time to replace the Dreamcast :>)

Due to the fact that a large number of “non-gamers” have bought a Wii for Wii Sports alone, Wii owners tend to play less games than xbox360 or PS3 owners, hence they would not be as popular from a rental perspective.

Thanks for the tip about Video Ezy in Belconnen having a good range of games. I’d only checked the Leading Edge and Blockbuster stores and had given up on the idea of renting Wii games.

Thanks for the report. Don’t suppose you saw legend of zelda at leading edge or video ezy? I only need it for a day to install the homebrew channel.

But regarding your concern… perhaps the rental shops realise that popular nintendo games have longer play/replay value, which doesn’t fit so well with 1-3 days of rent. And the gamers themselves are more casual and aren’t going to blister their thumbs trying to beat a game as fast as possible. Or maybe their business is just based on experience and nintendo didn’t do much for them in the past.

ps: thought about trading games? I’m always up for trading wii/360/ps3.
