Hello,

My name is Jo and I am the manager of the Youth department at Myer Canberra City. Recently I campaigned to introduce a regular student discount day in our Youth department and succeeded! I also have made some posters and if you are interested I can bring/post these to anyone who is interested also I have flyers if anyone would like these too. If you would like to discuss this further please don’t hesitate to contact me on 6120 7475.

Kind regards,

Jo

Caught a snippet on the radio the other day about Myer’s new marketing strategy – unfortunately I had to get out of the car, but it referred to the piloting of new marketing techniques. So it makes it sound very much as though “Miss Jo” is doing viral marketing on management orders and as a pilot program devised by Myer’s PR company. Am I wrong, Miss Jo? Happy to retract this post if you have convincing evidence!

Unfortunately I am not acting on any orders and as a result of the earbashing I have received on here I will be less enthusiastic when trying to use my initiative in the future. I would be interested to hear what the new Myer marketing strategies you heard were, as far as I’m aware we do catalogues, posters and t.v ads but that’s about it. I would have liked to support this site with a real ad and if I have anything else in the future I would definitely put forward a proposal to my manager about it. If any of you have anything else you would like to ask, perhaps you could come and see me and talk about what I am trying to achieve in the Youth Department, I will be there all day tomorrow (Student Discount Day) or call me on the work phone number listed above.
Thankyou.

Well if the Students are going to get 10% off at Myers on tight arse Tuesday they can all stop whinging about not having anywhere to park at the Uni.

You don’t see a David Jones store in Charnwood for what reason?

Have any of you saying Myer is overpriced ever actually bought anything there? I don’t shop there a lot, but I do buy my underwear there. They sell the same underwear in Target and K-Mart, and at the same price. The difference is that Myer is well stocked and not constantly filled with trailer trash and their masses of spawn. If you check out actual brands you will see that Myer’s prices are the same as everywhere else…it’s just that what might be top of the range in K-Mart is bottom of the range in Myer, they just tend to stock more expensive things.

Oh lord… BUY. Sorry. Why no edit button!? lol

Simple VY, save grog money, get shouted for a fortnight and pay them back drink by drink. Although, I haven’t been to Myers since I was doing night-shifts and pulling in a decent bit. I’m not a fashion man, really.

green_frogs_go_pop1:46 pm 08 May 08

Agreed.

how can ANYONE afford to go shopping at myers and the like confuses me!!

VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy1:25 pm 08 May 08

What I want to know is how the hell students can afford to go shopping at somewhere like Myers anyway (full time ones, anyway). When I was a student I didn’t know anyone that could buy anything other than Best and Less and Lowes type clothing, as we were all broke from buying food and basic living!

whatever happened to beer for comment?

I don’t have a problem with ads as such, but they already have a dedicated spot on RA – the top right hand column. I’m pretty sure Myers, even in it’s current parlous state could afford to, you know, PAY for a bit of PR. Jazz, can/will you guys make up ads for people who don’t have the time or talents to do it themselves? Maybe Jo can tap a tiny bit of her budget and help the upkeep of RA at the same time?

Haha. Rivers clearance stores at that. This certainly isn’t the first attempt at an organisation to reach people through riotact, can’t see what the big deal is to people. What about the poor Canberra musicians who are always bombarding the site trying to get people to their shows. Then there’s events like the Black Opal etc. Credit to the site that people/companies think it’s a good enough avenue to reach a large audience. Unfortunately, comments such as many of the ones above highlight the percentage of douche bags in said audience.

Haha!

Hey missjo, does the discount apply to jeans in the yoof dept. too?

BigDave…maybe studying will improve our chances of getting a higher-paid job and put a lot more into the economy. Big concept, I know. Try not to implode whilst thinking about it.

And it’s not like students get that much of a discount. Do you have any concept of what 10% actually is? The only thing I’d probably ever buy from myers is a decent shirt or pair of trousers, usually within the $40-$60 range. Let’s hit the middle ($50) and see how much I save. A WHOPPING $5!!!!!!! Wow!!!! That’s umm….a subway meal? I could even do two dinners if I cooked (shit). We’re living like kings over here in student-land!

I’m glad I chose to study instead of doing crap jobs for the rest of my life so I’d have to work 50 hours to pull in what an educated person would get in 30.

I think it’s spelt S – P – A – M, but you’re probably already familiar with the concept.

Mens youth is on level one, on the right as you enter the department and you can get 10% off Industrie and Kenji business shirts.

Phew, made it the whole way through without making a spelling mistake! Wait, how do you spell phew?

Ah, the spelling police..out in force

As I was recently a student myself I would have liked to have been informed of where and when I could have saved money buying items like work or casual clothing. I can also understand the frustrations of those who aren’t able to take advantage of this offer, however I would hope that you would see the benefit for those students who are eligable

Wonder what she was studying…doesn’t look like it was spelling!

Best she report to “RiotSquare” for a public lashing – 10 lashes should do it.

Youth is Men’s Youth/Miss Shop if I am correct.

I am still confused where is the youth department? Is there a sign that says Yuf here? How come the clothes are only for women according to your message? Does this mean that I can’t get 10% of business shirts, even know I am a student?

This is pure spam.

Thankyou to those who have supported me in my post. I would like you all to know that this is something that I am just trying to get out there so the students can take advantage of this deal. As I was recently a student myself I would have liked to have been informed of where and when I could have saved money buying items like work or casual clothing. I can understand some of your frustrations with commercialisation of sites such as these and I do not intend for this to become a commercialised forum and will not be posting future sales on this site, I really thought it was a great idea and something students could take advantage of. I can also understand the frustrations of those who aren’t able to take advantage of this offer, however I would hope that you would see the benefit for those students who are eligable and possibly if you know any of these persons, would let them know of the offer available to them. In response to one of the questions asked there is no age limit or discrimination between PT or FT students, all you need to show is a valid (current) student ID card from any institution with a photo of yourself on it. Tuggeranong and Belconnen stores should also be taking up this offer in the near future. Thankyou.

i like girls.

green_frogs_go_pop5:10 pm 07 May 08

why only civic?
I finish school at 3:45, in tuggeranong, there is no way in hell i can get to civic before 5. (Thankyou action buses, but thats another story!)

cant it be all myers?

Well done Jo,

You can only ask and they can only say no – but in this case success! (even if it comes with a few harsh barbs from some cynical contributors).

What about 35 year old part time students – do we qualify if we want to get into some of that “suddenly cool again” flouro gear?

CanberraResident3:40 pm 07 May 08

Jo – don’t worry, the fat cats on this site wouldn’t know a sincere offer if it hit ’em in the face.

You see, I’m pretty sure it’s cynicism that runs through their veins, not blood.

One of my girls is a FT student who could use the 10% discount.

Thanks for all your work in making this possible.

All the best with your career.

I reckon there’s a whole lot of RA readers that need to get laid. Then they might learn to relax a little.

bonfire, you’re clearly doing alright in the sack, haha–great movie!

Here are a list of brands that I endorse… I suggest that you spend your hard-earned clams with them…

yeah, right

WTF is this board allowing Myer’s PR department to invade it? GET THIS CRAP OFF!

This is not an attact on Jo, but why is Myers placing unpaid adverts on RiotACT disguised as some altruistic endeavour?

I did give this some consideration before letting it run. We have an unofficial policy of giving everyone a go at least once (even myer) however if we feel that the forum is being abused we’ll look upon these kinds of advertorials FAR less kindly. That goes for less profitable organisations and groups as well.

“It’s an open forum, an ACT online soapbox”

But yes, I would not like to see it descent into a “advert soapbox”

This is not an attact on Jo, but why is Myers placing unpaid adverts on RiotACT disguised as some altruistic endeavour?

VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy2:34 pm 07 May 08

I wasn’t attacking anyone, least of all Jo. It seems to me that businesses such as Myer maintain such large and lavish premises through large markup on product. My choice is not to shop there – the fact that an extra 10% discount is offered for no real reason other than to drum up business supports my view. I think shops like Myer are overpriced anyway.

(and before anyone responds with the obvious, yes, I realise other shops can be expensive too)

Sounds like Malaysian hardcore midget bands to me.

LOL – real loud. Wonder if they will be barred entry into Myer?

v_man_returns2:03 pm 07 May 08

Myer is great. Cheaper than DJs, and the staff don’t look at you like you’re germ ridden…even if you are. I buy at least 82 per cent of my work attire from there.

I’m going to send my young and studious girlfriend along to do my dirty work next Tuesday, although Myer tend to always be ‘on sale’, so it’s pretty useless to buy gear there full price when it’s only going to drop in a few weeks.

Looks like they’re trying to model Civic like ‘the basement’ in the Melbourne store, which is really popular.

No need to get into Jo though for putting herself out there and having a crack, hope it works

Myer has picked up its game since it was sold…

VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy said :

Just another reason never to shop at Myer. Clearly Myer has enough markup oin products that they can drop 10% of the price for no real reason at all (other than they need to drum up business).

That is a little unfair. Most businesses have the ability to take 10% of thier prices and regularly do for all sort of reasons….”It’s cricket season…10% off sale” “My mother in-law left town – 10% off sale”

Attacking Jo when she (I presume female) has obviously put some work into this and is using a little inititive, is a pretty harsh ??

Good luck Jo.

Oh and by the way, I’m not a student and therefore don’t qualify for the discount, so you buggers don’t attack me on that front 😉

Who knew there was a youth department?

Oh you lucky students!! More cheap stuff so you can continue to input nothing into the economy. It’s always nice to know that I work upto 50 hours a week and receive fuck all from Myers or anyone else.
