$750,000 to make public toilets amazing

Construction begun today on a project that sadly isn’t called “Project Pleasant Pooping.”

Upgrades to public toilets at both Dickson and Kambah shops are underway, and the old toilets at Maryborough Street in Fyshwick are being completely demolished and replaced.

There are public toilets at Dickson shops? Maybe the upgrade is to make them visible.

“The sites for the toilet upgrades were chosen based on an audit of public toilet facilities in 2008 which identified criteria such as visual amenity, condition of the structure, natural lighting, functionality, accessibility and compliance, safety and adequacy for the demand.

“The upgraded toilet facilities have been designed to positively reflect the character of the area in which they reside and to comply with current safety and access standards.

“A recent example of where this approach has worked well was in the upgrade of the Lotus Bay toilets in Yarralumla. The facility made use of the scenic surrounding by incorporating a shelter area with views of the lake, in addition to establishing new garden beds and new compliant access. The ‘floating’ concrete roof on the toilet facility invites in natural light which reflects the openness of the area.

“The upgraded toilet facilities will include wheel chair access compliant unisex toilets with a new sink, sharps deposit system, shelf, soap dispenser, baby changing facility and coat hooks. They will also have new accessibility features such as pans and hand rails that comply with the current Australian Standards.

Never underestimate the importance of a good coat hook in a public toilet, or even a private one. Coat hooks are the business.

If you’ll excuse me, I need to head out to the Lotus Bay toilets in Yarralumla, they sound radical.

Here’s an update on the public toilets in Fyshwick. The old beat was hurriedly closed down at the start of October and bulldozed. A note from TAMS was pinned to the hut saying that the new toilets would open two weeks later. The new toilets were completed but have laid idle. For almost three months there have been no public toilet facilities in Fyshwick.

In the late 1970s the then NSW premier Neville Wran said that the Fraser government couldn’t even run a pie stall. Now in 2013 it seems we have an ACT government which can’t even build a public toilet.

There;’s a new public loo going up at Cook shops, god knows why. I wonder if Katy will be doing the opening ceremony, and taking the first official dump in it, to christen it?

OK R. Slicker, time for another one of your public toilet stories…

So the Fyshwick toilets are being demolished. The best beat in Canberra.

As a life long Labor voter they have now lost me. I don’t care about their support for gay marriage, I now go on record as saying Vote Liberal.

Aeek licensed restaurants have to provide an accessible loo. Sometimes it’s shared between a few shops but you still go through a little side door or whatever to get there. Sometimes the loo doesn’t quite meet standards for “easily accessed” but it’s not worth forcing minor upgrades or taking a license away from an existing business in an old building.

It’s all very classy and seamless if the loo is accessed by an internal door that leads to a shared passageway. It’s a bit rough if you’re sent out the front door but that’s just appearances: if you can easily get to the building loo, you’re ok.

The nightmare is when it’s a private locked loo and some jerk steals the key.

so much for government efficiency dividends.

I don’t get this Canberra thing where Restaurants can rely on public toilets.
Our Federal Legacy is inferior shitters.

Probably no longer flush with cash due to waste..

I’ve seen some amazing things in public toilets, and it didn’t take $750K to make them happen.

There was one in a train station near Reims that I went into in 1980. Nearly a quarter of a century later the thought of it still haunts me.

The idea of using public loos at the Dickson shops worries me. Safer to go for a McPoo.

I thought that applied to all of Dickson.

There are public toilets in Dicko, behind the bus-stop across from the pool. They do have an aura “Abandon hope all ye who enter” to them though, so it’s not surprising you haven’t investigated them.
