Oh well, since posting this two weeks ago, my brush with a van on Limestone Ave. has come to nought. I was lucky. Talk about a dodgy position for the van, however: left of red car in this view, hard up against small tree and street poles. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Canberra+act&sll=-25.335448,135.745076&sspn=56.828725,79.013672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Canberra+Australian+Capital+Territory&ll=-35.270762,149.140917&spn=0.006482,0.009645&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=-35.270937,149.141017&panoid=963Txwj-aa3IKhlepv2Drg&cbp=12,177.54,,0,5.5

I went past one well over the limit on saturday. It was at night, and I did not see a flash. I was riding a motorbike, so in the absence of a front number plate, I think it is unlikely that I will get a ticket either way.

Yeah i’m sorry fnaah but you’re wrong. You will see a red flash when the camera takes a photo at night……

How certain are you? given this is an old thread… any current updates to this claim?

🙂

Yep, they flash. I saw one in my rear vision mirror driving through O’Connor once. Got the ticket a few weeks later. Interestingly though I got another letter a few months later giving me a refund and my point back as the 50 zone wasn’t marked.

I went past a speed camera van on the Barton Hwy near Mitchell one day (pre Gungahlin Dr) and it had the sensor things out on the side of the road a few metres before the van and it flashed as I went passed (even though I was sure I was doing the speed limit) but I never received a speeding fine.

Police don’t have speed check vans.

The tickets don’t even go to Police.

They don’t flash.

It’s your car headlights that reflect off of the red lens of the infra red flash.

(does that make sense?)

I fully support Headbonius.

Did you get pinged by the van on the parkway heading north from tuggeranong? 🙂

I’m pretty sure you won’t see a flash from the van-based cameras *or* the fixed ones. They use infra-red, which people can’t see.

they love putting one on the parkway heading north after sulwood drive at night time, i’ve seen one there many times, you can normally see the reflection of the sign well ahead anyway.

And the answer to the question is yes. they normally put a flash unit outside the van when operating at night.

Why don’t you test it? Go reallllly fast past one at night and have a look?

I doubt you’ll actually do this as you haven’t read the other posts about Police not operating the speed vans.

In all seriousness, please don’t test this. Curiosity is one thing, but stupidity is another. Although Darwin had a theory….

FFS, don’t you morons know anything? This has nothing to do with the Police. FMD.

madman: Actually, the photo that’s always taken is a reference photo. Then, if a car goes over the sensors during the red light period, a second photo is taken. The reference photo allows them to prove that the car entered the intersection after the light turned red (rather than, say, getting stuck there because of having to stop for someone walking in front of them or what have you). This used to be detailed on the TAMS site, but I can’t find it there now. The information here, though, is still pretty clear that a photo used for booking people is taken in response to a car crossing the sensors. Otherwise, how would they book people who go through the light after the automatic photo has been taken?

Yeah i’m sorry fnaah but you’re wrong. You will see a red flash when the camera takes a photo at night.

And the fixed cameras have a bright white flash all time round. Next time your stopping at a red light camera at night – cast your eyes to the centre of the intersection and you will see a short illumination just after the red signal as in most instances the fixed take a photo evrytime the light changes to red. Then the back office software detects if there is a car in that photo and reads the number plate and automatically issues the fine.

just face it, if you are over the limit, and it is at night, you are gone if you went past a van. 24-hour operation. only time you might have success in not getting pinged is at dawn or dusk – where the van is facing the sun rise or set.

They have flashes that appear red when they go off.
Saw one go off on Horse Park Drive a few nights ago.
