Hey guys…..want to go for a drive with the kids and get amongst some snow, but we don’t want to go all the way to Jindabyne and beyond. ‘

We have 4WD.

Where’s the closest place which is relatively accessible and will give us serious ground cover ? Advice required.

Actually quite a lot of people do, with most not regretting it.

But it’s best to say hi and introduce yourself.

When you’re sorta-quasi-infamous you have to keep checking that you’re not assuming anyone knows who you are.

So a head nod from a stranger I’ll usually assume was meant for someone else.

How did we come to be talking about this though?

kitchen man wanted to know where to see the snow, close to canberra. he didn’t end up going to the snow, so the conversation became one of music, and sightings of people in canberra.

(as far as I understand it)

“After the news” – The Reels 1980. Doesn’t get much better.

I saw Dave Mason just by his house in Potts Point once. Haven’t seen John Boy for a while tho’.

You acknowledged JohnBoy in public? That was your first mistake! No one does that.

perhaps he was looking at you, thinking, I know that guy….

I can guarantee that no one who looks at me thinks that.

It’s surreal when that sort’ve stuff happens Ant. I saw Johnboy once on Northbourne Ave……I nodded at him, but he just looked straight through me

I saw Dave Mason in Civic once (walking past the Gelato place where Garema and Bunda meet). I gawped at him (I mean, he was famous! He was on Countdown!) and nodded, and he nodded back. Wow.

They were a brilliant band. Quasimodo’s Dream was my favourite.

Well, I don’t mind, I don’t mind at all
I’ve got my internet and Rioact
I don’t mind at all

My prefab heart just falls apart when you depart agaaaaaaiiin.

There was the Reels talent quest around the same time as Reels by Request where lucky members of the audience took over vocal duties for different numbers.

A brilliant if misunderstood band.

And to think they were from Dubbo ?!

aha! something good from dubbo!
(apart from the zoo and a few pubs.

And to think they were from Dubbo ?!

I was at The Club in Collingwood when the Reels performed Reels by Request in which they chucked laminated A4 pages featuring their songs and numbers next to them into the packed crowd. They then would ask what one to sing next and whatever number was yelled out the loudest, they sung! It was GREAT! I also think that they do the absolute best ever version of This Guys in Love (Burt Bacarrat). And the film clip, OMG, all that hair! mmmmmmmm!

Thanks guys….after all that we sort’ve ran out of time and ended up taking a drive to Yass and having a countery at the Country Club Hotel. Would thoroughly recommend ‘Danama’s Kitchen’. Good cheap pub food in a really nice dining room so it wasn’t actually ‘in’ the pub.

Thank you Peter and Seekay. Dave Mason lives on hey ! Not that he’s actually dead.

Kitchen Man. I like anyone whose nick is the same as a Reels’ song title.

I like the fact that it is a local (ex) radio personality – who feels that they are a part of the community, and they are.

I’d head up into the brindies (there’s a road from Belconnen, and another you turn off from the Cotter Road, they both link up), it’s very accessible. the Brindies had a decent cover the other day, and the south-facing bits of the hills should have good cover. There were some very cold clouds over the mountains last night, wouldn’t be suprised if they were dropping some more snow.

I heard that the snow is already gone from the lower parts of Thredbo, and it’s quite spring-like halfway up. Up top is still dry winter snow.

Drive down to Michelago then head east along the Tinderry Road into the Tinderry Nature Park. It’s a great 40 km long dirt track though some beautifully wild country that takes you towards Captains Flat. The Tinderry Park is at the top of some mountains. Thredbo it ain’t, but there was good snow up there when I went through mid-Saturday afternoon. Three minutes on Google Maps will give you all the info you need.

Just be sure to go into the Nature Park bit of the mountains. There’s areas up there that are private property – so be careful not to inadvertently stray into somebody’s backyard!

Take the Cotter Road, turn off towards Brindabella, about 15km of dirt road, easy in a 4wd will have you at Picadilly Circus with all the snow your children could hope for.
