$850,000 set aside to investigate an alternative for the Mugga Lane tip site

The ABC News Online has a story that the ACT Government are about to investigate a new land fill site to replace the Mugga Lane tip. John Hargreaves was interviewed this morning on ABC 666 and he let slip that there would be $850,000 allocated in the upcoming budget for the consultancy to investigate an alternative site. Another waste of local tax payers money used to tell the Government the obvious…. I’d be happy for the ACT Government to give me the lions share of the money set aside for this consultancy to tell them that they ought to take their rubbish up the road to the Veolia Woodlawn Bio-reactor near Tarago. The Bio-reactor is a dirty big hole in the ground that will take 50 years to fill and the site is used to generate electricity from the methane gas from rubbish decomposition. Whilst it is not in the ACT, it makes sense from a level of sustainability to make use of resources in the local region.

Cranky I vote for a steam engine train to haul the garbage from the Mugga tip. Black smoke and a shrill whistle to keep the MacArthur reidents happy :-0

Thumper all those people would cost close to that much. Add up the salaries, then nearly double for entitlements, insurances and super etc.

Increasingly, they seem to think that if they heap up the bureacracy, generate lots of paper, somehow that makes the result more “probity-ish” or something.

Yeah, think of the ZOMFG UNBEARABLE NOISE Macarthur residents would have to put up with, cranky (in other words, great idea! 🙂 )

Containerised garbage from Sydney is currently (and one assumes profitably) sent to the Woodlawn mine site.

A railway siding/loading facility in Hume, on the existing rail line, would be in close proximity to the waste industries already located on Mugga Lane. A 30k or so trip to Tarago would have to be economically viable.

They used to rail minerals from Tarago, so yes it could be done

And as for rail, is there any freight on that line? How much would the trains cost, and how much fuel would they use.

Hell, figuring this stuff out shouldn’t cost 850K! Let’s form a “consultancy”!

The problem with Tarago is that it’s 50kms away – that’s a lot of wasted transport fuel to cart garbage to a hole in the ground. It wouldn’t take long to work out exactly how much – number of trucks per year x fuel consumption of truck during round trip to Tarago.

Maybe to Great Hall in Capital Hill?

The biggest shit hole is in Ngunnawal.

Move it closer to Macarthur.

Send it to Tarago via rail..?

Charnwood.

Failing that, their is another great big hole in the ground from a failed government enterprise just south of Williamsdale. It is close to a rail line as well.

Aye for Woodlawn for me, perhaps they can give $600k to upgrade the rail link to Tarago, put a transfer station in Fyshwick and get Queanbeyan Council to put in $50k for its rubbish to go to Woodlawn as well.

The RiotACT will distribute the other $250k appropriately.

Report done.

My first thought on reading your head line was Woodlawn. Anywhere else would seem a little stoopid.
